New Life in Christ: An Evidence of Salvation
"Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we that are dead to sin still live in it?" (Romans 6:1-2)
Many passages in God's Word undeniably explain that a person who is truly saved or born again will have legitimate changes in life and will not remain living in sin. The Bible testifies that before we were born again, we were "dead in sins" (Eph. 2:1). But after we experienced the spiritual quickeningby the Holy Spirit through the gospel, we are now "dead to sin" as Romans 6:2 reasoned.
The challenge, and a problem, of Christianity today is many have claimed to be a follower of Christ and claimed assurance but their faith lacks the evidence by the way they work out their salvation. One who professes such faith in Christ, regardless how convinced he or she is, but show no evidence of spiritual transformation and fruits but remains unchanged from the former life of sin, is but a self-deceived. That's the witness of God'sWord. Salvation is not a matter of how convinced we are about ourselves because we profess such a faith, but on the fact of the testimony of the Scriptures that those who are "in Christ [are] a new creation" since the Holy Spirit regenerates and renews them (Jn. 3:7-8; 2 Cor. 5:17; Tit. 3:5). Even Jesus taught that all who believe in Him will never perish to eternal damnation because He gave them eternal life, and that no one is able to pluck them out of His and the Father's hand (John 10:28-29). That's eternal security. That's assurance of salvation. However, many professing Christians who claimed this verses never considered verse twenty-seven that Jesus, before giving the eternal assurance of salvation, spoke that His sheep (true believers) will listen to His voice and follow Him in a life of obedience to His will. Thus, Jesus' true sheep will show a life that characterizes obedience to His will and spiritual transformation. Furthermore, the beloved apostle John poignantly wrote that those who are "born of God will not keep on sinning" because God's seed (i.e., His divine nature) remains in them and they cannot keep on sinning because they are born of God (1 John 3:9-10).
We may argue with our reasoning and human logic to make excuses for our actions, but the testimony of the Scriptures never lies and it's the standard of which truth is determined. By the judgment of God's Word, either one is self-deceived, or is truly saved, based on the fruit that a person is showing behind a lip profession. This message challenges us to introspect ourselves diligently of our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ of its authenticity, otherwise, we fail to examine or test our Christianity (cf. 2 Cor. 13:5).
