Rita of Cascia, OSA (born Margherita Ferri Lotti; 1381 โ€“ 22 May 1457), was an Italian Catholic widow and Augustinian nun. After Rita's husband died, she joined a small community of nuns who later became Augustinians. Therein, she was known both for practicing mortification of the flesh[1] and for the efficacy of her prayers. Various miracles are attributed to her intercession, and she is often portrayed with a bleeding wound on her forehead, which is understood to indicate partial stigmata.

Pope Leo XIII canonized Rita on 24 May 1900. Her feast day is celebrated on 22 May. At her canonization ceremony, she was bestowed the title of "Patroness of Impossible Causes". In many Catholic countries, Rita also came to be known as the patroness of abuse victims, couples and marriage difficulties, widows, and the sick. Her bodily remains lie in the Basilica of Santa Rita of Cascia in Umbria.

Bernardino was born in 1380 in the Republic of Siena, to the noble Albizzeschi family of Massa Marittima, Tuscany, a comun in the contado of Province of Grosseto, of which his father, Albertollo degli Albizzeschi, was then governor.[6] Left orphaned at six, he was raised by a pious aunt. In 1397, after a course of civil and canon law, he joined the Confraternity of Our Lady attached to the hospital of Santa Maria della Scala. Three years later, when the plague visited Siena, he ministered to the plague-stricken, and, assisted by ten companions, took upon himself for four months entire charge of this hospital.[7] He escaped the plague but was so exhausted that a fever confined him for several months.[8] In 1403 he joined the Observant branch of the Order of Friars Minor (the Franciscan Order), with strict observance of Saint Francis's Rule. Bernardino was ordained a priest in 1404 and was commissioned as a preacher the next year.[9] In about 1406 Saint Vincent Ferrer, a Dominican friar and missionary, while preaching at Alessandria in the Piedmont region of Italy, allegedly foretold that his mantle should descend upon one who was then listening to him, and said that he would return to France and Spain, leaving to Bernardino the task of evangelizing the remaining peoples of Italy.[7]

St. Peter Morrone was born in 1215 in Isernia, Italy. Drawn to prayer and solitude from a young age, he became a Benedictine monk and later lived as a hermit in the mountains. His holiness attracted followers, and he eventually founded a new branch of the Benedictines, later called the Celestines. In 1294, during a long papal vacancy, Peter was unexpectedly elected pope at the age of 79, taking the name Celestine V. Humble and inexperienced in politics, he struggled to manage the complexities of Church governance. After only five months, he resigned the papacyโ€”a rare and courageous act of humility. He returned to a life of prayer but was imprisoned by his successor out of political fears. St. Peter Morrone died in 1296, remembered more for his holiness and humility than for his brief time as pope.

Saint Pascal Baylon, also known as Paschal, was born on 24 May 1540 in Torre Hermosa, Aragon, in modern-day Spain. He was the son of Martin Baylon and Elizabeth Jubera, both pious peasants deeply devoted to their faith. From a young age, Pascal displayed an exceptional devotion to the Eucharist, which would become a defining characteristic of his life. As a child, Pascal worked as a shepherd from the ages of seven to twenty-four. Despite being surrounded by a sometimes rowdy group of shepherd friends, he consistently served as a good influence on them, and his devoutness served as an example to the others. Pascal's love for God and the Eucharist permeated his daily life, guiding his actions and interactions with others. Following his years as a shepherd, Pascal joined the Franciscan Order as a lay brother. He became a member of the Alcantarine Reform, a branch of the Franciscan Order known for its strict adherence to poverty and austerity. Within the order, Pascal often served as a cook or doorkeeper, humbly attending to the needs of his fellow friars. Pascal's charity towards the poor and afflicted, his unwavering courtesy, and exceptional humility were notable even among the Franciscans, known for their commitment to these virtues. Despite his limited education, Pascal became a trusted counselor sought after by both the rich and the poor, who recognized his deep wisdom and holiness. During his travels through France, Pascal found himself in a confrontation with a Calvinist preacher who rejected the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Fierce in defending the truth, Pascal fearlessly stood up against the blasphemies, risking his life to protect the Catholic faith. Narrowly escaping death at the hands of a Huguenot mob as a result, Pascal's courageous stand and unwavering faith made a profound impact on those who witnessed the encounter. Saint Pascal Baylon died on 15 May 1592 at Villa Reale, Spain, at the age of fifty-one. He passed away due to natural causes, but his legacy of devotion to the Eucharist and compassion for the poor lived on. Recognizing his exceptional virtues, Pope Paul V beatified Pascal on 29 October 1618, and he was later canonized by Pope Alexander VIII on 16 October 1690. Saint Pascal Baylon's cultus, or veneration, remains strong especially in Spain, southern Italy, and Central and South America. He is represented in art as a man in adoration before a vision of the Host, symbolizing his profound devotion to the Eucharist. Additionally, Saint Pascal Baylon is the patron saint of cooks, Eucharistic congresses and organizations (proclaimed by Pope Leo XIII on 28 November 1897), shepherds, and several locations such as Bisenti, Italy; Castelnuovo, Assisi, Italy; Montebello, Orciano di Pesaro, Italy; Obando, Bulacan, Philippines; and the diocese of Segorbe-Castellรณn de la Plana, Spain. Saint Pascal Baylon continues to inspire and intercede for those who seek his guidance, providing an enduring example of a life devoted to Christ, especially through his profound love for the Eucharist.

Simon Stock, OCarm was an English Catholic priest and saint who lived in the 13th century and was an early prior of the Carmelite Order. The Blessed Virgin Mary is traditionally said to have appeared to him and given him the Brown Scapular. Popular devotion to Saint Simon Stock is usually associated with devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Today, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers and laborers.

St. Isidore lived a life of humility, hard work, and deep faith in God. Despite his simple life as a farmer, he became an example of holiness through prayer, honesty, and service to others.

May his life inspire us to work faithfully, trust in Godโ€™s providence, and remain humble in all that we do. Through his intercession, may God continue to bless our families, our work, and our daily lives.

There is no mention of a Matthias among the lists of disciples or followers of Jesus in the three synoptic gospels, but according to Acts, he had been with Jesus from his baptism by John until Jesus's Ascension. In the days following, Peter proposed that the assembled disciples, who numbered about 120, nominate two men to replace Judas. They chose Joseph called Barsabbas (whose surname was Justus) and Matthias. Then they prayed, "Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all [men], shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place."[3] Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was numbered with the eleven apostles.[4]

No further information about Matthias is to be found in the canonical New Testament. Even his name is variable: the Syriac version of Eusebius calls him throughout not Matthias but "Tolmai", not to be confused with Bartholomew (which means Son of Tolmai), who was one of the twelve original Apostles; Clement of Alexandria refers once to Zacchaeus in a way which could be read as suggesting that some identified him with Matthias;[5] the Clementine Recognitions identify him with Barnabas; Adolf Bernhard Christoph Hilgenfeld thinks he is the same as Nathanael in the Gospel of John.
