To follow Jesus means to take His mission as our own and to do what He had done. It doesn’t mean however that we need to be crucified like Him. To follow means to stay behind Him and allow Him to lead us. Although He is divine, He is also human like each one of us. His practical mission is something ordinary people can do. Bringing good news to the poor, proclaiming liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind, giving freedom to the oppressed and proclaiming a year acceptable to the Lord are doable mission of anyone.

John the Baptist is just one of the best examples of a persecuted or martyred preacher or any person for that matter who attempts to speak the truth. Truth really hurts and many people would rather choose to live in the lie rather than the truth. It takes courage to stand up for the truth and John the Baptist gave his life for it.

To rest for a while means it is a temporary thing. We rest so that we can have more energy to continue working. It means to retreat but not to give up. We rest so that Jesus can fill up or rather refill our depleted strength. Resting when tired is much like having a retreat when our faith is weakening. In the gospel reading above, Jesus is telling us to go to a place away from the hustle and bustle of city life, to have a retreat in a deserted place so that we can be able to focus on Him, to secluded place where He can teach us many things because nothing can be able to disturb us.

We may say that the people in the gospel reading were very lucky to meet Jesus in person and luckier were those who got healed. Yet for those of us who believe in Him should not envy them. Jesus is alive and He is available to tend to our needs even at this very moment. Like the people in our gospel reading, may we have the eyes of faith to recognize His presence. Moreover, may we have the same faith in His healing power. We cannot touch Him physically so let us ask Jesus instead to touch us and heal us. Also, let us be an instrument for the healing of others. We may not physically bring the sick to hospital but our prayers can be powerful enough to bring them to health.

Washing hands before eating is necessary for hygiene but a clean heart is far more important. God is more interested in our intentions rather than our appearance. He looks into our words and actions and determines whether they are loving or not. After all, a heart full of love will express itself in our words and actions.

Let us maintain the faith that He can do miracles in our life and that His mission is still to reach out to the outsider...

Let us maintain the faith that He can do miracles in our life and that His mission is still to reach out to the outsider, the sick and the unclean. Lastly, the gospel is reminding us that salvation is for all. Although Jesus started His mission in a small territory in the Middle East, His command is to spread the gospel to all nations (MARK 16:15).

Jesus has shown the futility of arguments or debates. His followers should heed His example. It is best to just leave people who argue a lot. There is nothing to be gained from it. What is needed is to do good at all times.

God does give signs to His faithful children even if we don’t ask for them. God reveals Himself in more ways than one. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will help us see, understand and appreciate these heavenly signs and wonders.

It is striking that the healing become complete only after a second attempt. Applying it in our daily life, we must not be disappointed when we fail the first time. Patience and persistence are the keys to success.

Like the people in the story, may we bring others to get a healing touch from the Lord. In particular, may He touch our eyes so we may see completely the signs and wonders that He is doing in our life.

Our faith proclaims that God is the creator of the universe. He is therefore the source of all things on earth or in the heavens. The minerals beneath the earth, the bountiful farms, forests and seas are all gifts from the Lord. Our abilities, skills and talents all come from Him.

No one can claim that he owns something apart from God. No one can boast that he has acquired material wealth all by himself. Only the fool do that.
