MABUTING BALITA:
Mateo 1, 16. 18-21. 24a

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, popularly known as "Candlemas" or "Candelaria" in the Philippines.

Forty days after Christmas, we commemorate Mary's purification as called for by the Law of Moses, bringing with her Jesus, her firstborn, to be presented in the Temple. She brings Jesus the true Light, represented by the candles blessed and lighted in celebration of Candlemas.

Let us bring candles to be blessed in the beginning of today's Eucharistic celebration and bring and spread the Light of Jesus, our true Hope in this Jubilee year, to our community and society.

Today is the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time and also the National Bible Sunday.

In today's Gospel, Jesus returns to Galilee, teaches widely, and in Nazareth, reads from Isaiah, announcing the fulfillment of the prophecy, emphasizing his mission to liberate and heal, witnessed by his hometown.

As St. Josemaria Escriva wrote: "He has become so small -you see: a Child! - so that you can approach Him with confidence."

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Jesus, the end of the Christmas season in the Novus Ordo liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church.

Saint Josemaria Escriva shares a beautiful reflection for this celebration:

“See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are…. Beloved, we are God’s children now” (1 Jn 3:1-2). These words still sound fresh, urgent, and attractive to us after two thousand years. As soon as we hear them, we want to seize upon them and say: It’s true, I believe it, but how? What does it feel like to be a child of God? What does it look like? Are these even the right questions to ask?

God makes us His children so that He can love us as our Father, so that He can share His goodness in the most abundant way possible. Children are in the best possible position to receive: everything that they need must come from their parents. Just so, the Lord wants us to rest spiritually in that same dependent position, so that He can give as a Father gives and we can receive as children receive.

Our baptism initiates us into this mystery of God’s love for us, because in it the Father’s love is impressed within us—a love which He never removes. What St Josemaria calls the “deepest truth” about ourselves means exactly this: In the Lord’s baptism our own status as God’s children is shown forth. As the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus and the Father declares His pleasure in His Son, the deepest truth about our identity is revealed: We too are God’s beloved children, whose calling it is to receive the love that He pours into us with gratitude and the desire to repay the favors of a Father who loves us to the point of madness.

“We have come to worship Him.” (Matthew 2:2)

Today the Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines and in other nations celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, commonly known as "Three Kings"

"Epiphany" means "manifestation". We honor the manifestation of Christ to the nations, as the Magi—guided by the star—found and adored the newborn King. This feast reminds us that Jesus is the Savior of all, calling each of us to seek and worship Him.

Here is an excerpt from the homily for 'The Epiphany of our Lord' in the book 'Christ is passing by' of Saint Josemaría Escrivá:
"Going into the house they saw the child with Mary, his Mother." Our Lady is always by her Son. The Magi are not received by a king on a high throne, but by a child in the arms of his Mother. Let us ask the Mother of God, who is our Mother, to prepare for us the way that leads to the fullness of love. Cor Mariae dulcissimum, iter para tutum: "Most Sweet Heart of Mary, prepare a safe way!" Her sweet heart knows the surest path for finding Christ.
