We culminated our Malaysia roadshow at the sprawling, family-friendly A'Famosa Resort in Melaka — a destination known for bringing leisure, adventure, and business together.

But we were not there for a vacation. 😅

We spent two full workshop days facilitating Lead Like Jesus’ The Way of the Carpenter for more than 120 educators from Sri Sempurna International School.

And what a fitting way to end our journey.

Educators do more than deliver lessons. Every day, they shape character, build confidence, and develop young people — often in ways they may never fully see.

The Way of the Carpenter reminds us that developing people takes intentionality. We must understand where they are, give them what they need, and patiently help them grow until they are ready to develop others.

Thank you, Dr. Lincoln Goh, for inviting us and for investing in the people who invest so much of themselves in the next generation.

Ten days. Two cities. Six workshop days. Two keynote talks.

We came to Malaysia to equip leaders.

We leave deeply encouraged by the people we met—and grateful for the privilege of building people who build others. 🇲🇾

“The strongest leaders don’t begin by asking their people to change. They ask what they must change in themselves.”

I meet many organizational leaders because of my work. When I choose to write about one, it is because I genuinely respect them — and have been deeply impressed by how they lead.

Lau Mee Ting, President of The Girls' Brigade Malaysia, is one of those leaders.

She continuously looks for ways to develop her team. That is why we facilitated DISCover the Leader Within You and The Way of the Carpenter — to help their leaders grow in self-awareness and become more intentional in discipling and developing others.

But what impressed me most was not simply her desire to improve her team.

It was her willingness to change herself.

During an accountability circle, I asked a group of conscientious women what they felt they needed to adjust.

Before they could answer, Mee Ting interjected:

“They don’t need to change anything. We, their leaders, need to change.”

That stayed with me.

It takes authority to lead an organization.

But it takes humility to look inward first.

Mee Ting loves her team enough to develop them—and is humble enough to let them develop her, too. Perhaps that is why her team loves and respects her in return.

The best leaders do not stand above their people, demanding change.

They stand among them and say:

“Let the change begin with me.”

The true test of leadership is not how much people depend on you.

It is how ready they become to lead without you.

I recently had the privilege of facilitating The Way of the Carpenter, a Lead Like Jesus workshop that offers a practical, step-by-step process for discipling and developing the people we lead.

The framework recognizes four developmental stages:

The Novice needs clear instruction.

The Apprentice needs guidance, practice, and encouragement.

The Journeyman needs growing trust and responsibility.

The Master Teacher is ready not only to perform—but to develop others.

Here is what makes the framework powerful: development is task-specific.

Someone can be a Master Teacher in one area and a Novice in another. Effective leaders do not use one leadership style for everyone. They discern what each person needs at that moment—and adapt how they instruct, coach, encourage, and empower.

As Jesus demonstrated with His disciples, high performance comes not simply from announcing the destination, but from patiently guiding people through the journey.

The goal is not dependency.

The goal is development.

Not merely followers who complete assignments, but disciples who grow in competence, confidence, character, and the capacity to equip others.

That is the Way of the Carpenter: building people with the same intentionality, patience, and love that Jesus modeled.

Leadership is not just about getting the work done.

It is about helping people become all that God intended them to be.

Leadership begins with awareness.

We just completed two meaningful days of DISCover the Leader Within You in Kuala Lumpur — primarily for The Girls' Brigade Malaysia, with special guests from The Boys' Brigade (BB) in Malaysia and fellow training consultants in KL.

DISC may help us understand behavioral styles, but its real value goes much deeper:

Self-awareness leads to self-management.

Social awareness leads to better team management.

When we understand how we naturally communicate, respond to pressure, make decisions, and relate to others, we become more intentional leaders.

And when we learn to recognize and appreciate the different styles around us, we stop expecting everyone to think and work exactly as we do.

We adjust. We connect. We bring out the best in people.

Grateful for two days filled with discovery, honest reflection, laughter, and learning across organizations.

The best leaders don’t simply know their teams.

They first learn to know themselves.
