(Mt. 26:36-42) Feast of Jesus Christ Our Lord, Eternal High Priest

In today’s Gospel Jesus is in Gethsemane praying with His disciples. Thrice He was confronted with drinking from the cup which was symbolic of His acceptance of His mission to save mankind by dying on the cross. Jesus agonized because of the sorrow and bitterness which is contained in the cup. He was experiencing the full import of our sins which He will erase by His death. It was His Father’s will. God loves us so much that He gave His only begotten Son. Jesus willingly drank the cup, His cup!

The Church celebrates today the feast of Jesus our Lord, the Eternal High Priest. We recognize Jesus as the Mediator between God and man. It was not only shown in His dying in the Cross but in always interceding for us with the Father. As the Son of God, He was the perfect Mediator.

But the whole Church participates in the mission of Christ the High Priest. By virtue of our Baptism, we all participate in the mission of sanctifying the world wherever we are. And the other participant to Christ’s Priesthood are the presbyters or commonly called “priests” whose priesthood are different in essence and not just in degree. It is particularly evident in the ordained celebration of the sacrifice of the Mass where he acts in persona Christi.

Thus, this feast highlights what Christ has done and how His saving action was shared in and to the faithful and the ordained. The common priesthood of the baptized means praying for the community and being involved in the saving mission of Jesus through the sacraments. On the part of the ordained, we have priests who have committed themselves to continuing what Jesus started, preserving and teaching His words, at the same time be confirmed to Christ to be living witnesses of faith and love.

Let us pray for priests. Today is one of those days when we call on God and beg Him to protect, nourish, and sanctify them. Let the Eternal High Priest be honored by the common priesthood of the baptized and the ordained priesthood. And may we imitate our High Priest in our lives.

(Mk. 10:28-31) Tuesday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

In today's Gospel Jesus assures those who will give up everything will receive a hundredfold in return. He was stressing the importance of generosity not only materially but also spiritually. We should not be afraid always to render service. The more we give the more God will see to it that we are filled and capable of giving.

Note that Jesus had cited family relations, house, and land as not exempted from this. Also we tend to give only what are excesses. We tend to limit our generosity up to these things. In the context of the Jews, these things are their lives already. To include them in what we can give means giving also our lives.

But the giving must be qualified. Love is of course a good reason. But Jesus wanted it done for the sake of the Gospel and Him. Salvation is the ultimate reason. Being with God in God's Kingdom is the purpose. In fact, everythig about the faith should be done always in that context. The teaching of Jesus on the Beatitudes also makes the same imperative.

This is a good reminder for us. We have the tendency to treasure things of the world more than the God who made and saved us. Settling for what are fleeting and limited is a foolish decision. Without God we have nothing. With God, we have everything.

(Jn. 19:25-27) Monday After Pentecost, Mary Mother of the Church

In today’s Gospel, Mary and some women, and John, the beloved disciple, were at the foot of the cross before the dying Jesus. Before His death, Jesus entrusted His mother to John and John to His mother. There is so much cultural tradition in these words of the Lord. Jesus cared for His mother who took care of Him well. Scholars believed that at this time, Joseph was already dead. Normally, the mother was entrusted to the oldest son. But Jesus regarded His apostles as family. Thus, Jesus was leaving His mother to the disciple who courageously stood with His mother when Jesus was unwanted. It follows, that Jesus was also entrusting His “family,” the Church, to His mother. Mary was to apply her motherhood to the followers of Jesus.

We celebrate today the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. It is celebrated every Monday after Pentecost. The title,Mother of the Church, has been bestowed on the Blessed Virgin Mary because she gave birth to Christ, the Head of the Church, and became Mother of the redeemed before her Son gave up His spirit on the Cross. Thanks to Pope Francis, this old title was given due recognition and celebration in 2018. The Holy Father wishes to promote this devotion in order to “ encourage the growth of the maternal sense of the Church in the pastors, religious, and faithful, as well as a growth of genuine Marian piety.”

Jesus, the Son of Mary, founded the Church. The Church was entrusted with the nourishment and protection of the believers. The witnesses of the disciples were preserved and passed on from generation to generation. It is the task of the Church to teach what Jesus said and did. It is also the task of the Church to defend Her members against evil forces. The Blessed Virgin Mary’s model of discipleship guides the Church: obedience, faith, and hope.

Mary was known for her obedience to the Father. Jesus grew up witnessing that from His parents, Mary and Joseph. The Church should learn from Mary. Obedience to the Father guarantees that the members receive the faith which Jesus wrought.

Mary’s faith was tested from the annunciation to the death of her Son. She understood and accepted God’s plan. It was difficult witnessing what her Son, Jesus, went through. But she kept her faith in God. She trusted that Jesus’ passion and death will lead to something divine. As it happened, the resurrection of Jesus came. The Church should show this similar faith of Mary in God. Like the boat at sea sailing through strong winds and big waves, She should not be afraid but trust that “It is the Lord!”

This leads us to Mary’s hope. Her motherhood of Jesus and perfect discipleship merited her the assumption into heaven. The Church hopes to join Mary and Jesus in the Kingdom too!

Mary, Mother of the Church!
Pray for us!

REJOICE FOR THE GIFT OF FAITH! | SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST | HAPPY BIRTHDAY CATHOLIC CHURCH! 🔥

Happy birthday to the Catholic Church! Happy birthday to you, who are the body of the Church!

We're all familiar with our own birthdays, and we celebrate them because they mark the day of the year in which we entered into this life. But did you know you have a second birthday?

Because you are part of the body of the Church, Pentecost is the Church's birthday, and yours as well. And like any birthday, it's a cause for celebration.

Pentecost (Greek for 50th day) is celebrated by Christians 50 days after Easter, and marks the day that the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles while they were cowering and hiding behind locked doors following Jesus' resurrection. After receiving the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit, the apostles immediately went out and preached Jesus' message to everyone—even those who spoke other languages.

On that day, the Holy Trinity is fully revealed. Since that day, the Kingdom announced by Christ has been open to those who believe in him: in the humility of the flesh and in faith, they already share in the communion of the Holy Trinity. By his coming, which never ceases, the Holy Spirit causes the world to enter into the “last days,” the time of the Church, the Kingdom already inherited though not yet consummated.
