The SJB Parish Chorale

The SJB Parish Chorale Driven by the passion for music & service, the SJB Parish Chorale serves at St. John Bosco Parish through the 5:30PM Sunday mass, concerts & special events

The St. John Bosco (SJB) Chorale is a church-based choral group composed of students and young professionals. In November of 2000, Ms. Rose Marie Hugo, then head of the Ministry on Music and Cultural Affairs (MOMCA), together with Mr. Lester Delgado brought together the various choirs of the SJB Parish into a grand choir which animated special liturgical celebrations of SJB Parish, Makati. Seeing

the potential of the group, they honed the skills of its members, and since then the SJB Chorale has evolved into a full-fledged, accomplished and multi-awarded choral group. The group distinguished itself in several local choral festivals and competitions, including the Harmonies 2004 Choral Festival of the UST Conservatory of Music, Kamayan Christmas Choral Competition (2002 Grand Prize Winner ), Paskong Himig ng Pasig (2005 & 2006 Grand Champion), PAGCOR Choral Competition (2005 1st runner-up), Himig Pop Choral Competition (2004 1st runner-up and Best Song Interpretation Award for George Cansecoโ€™s โ€œNgayonโ€), Harana Kay Maria Choral Competition (2005 2nd runner-up) and the 1st Vianneyhan Choral Competition (2010 Grand Champion). The SJB Chorale has, likewise, wowed Filipino communities and foreign audiences in memorable international concert tours and festivals: (2004 & 2005) Hongkong , (2007) Austria, Belgium and Germany, (2008) Canada, (2010) Singapore. As it begins its second decade under the guidance of Mr. Vincent Olandesca, the SJB Chorale continues to focus on fulfilling its mission of sharing its generous gift of song with more and more people here and abroad in Masses, concerts, festivals and tours.

Acts 8:5-8, 14-17
Philip went down to the city of Samaria
and proclaimed the Christ to them.
With one accord, the crowds paid attention to what was said by Philip
when they heard it and saw the signs he was doing.
For unclean spirits, crying out in a loud voice,
came out of many possessed people,
and many paralyzed or crippled people were cured.
There was great joy in that city.

Now when the apostles in Jerusalem
heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God,
they sent them Peter and John,
who went down and prayed for them,
that they might receive the Holy Spirit,
for it had not yet fallen upon any of them;
they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Then they laid hands on them
and they received the Holy Spirit.

1 Peter 3:15-18
Beloved:
Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts.
Always be ready to give an explanation
to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope,
but do it with gentleness and reverence,
keeping your conscience clear,
so that, when you are maligned,
those who defame your good conduct in Christ
may themselves be put to shame.
For it is better to suffer for doing good,
if that be the will of God, than for doing evil.

For Christ also suffered for sins once,
the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous,
that he might lead you to God.
Put to death in the flesh,
he was brought to life in the Spirit.

Gospel
John 14:15-21
Jesus said to his disciples:
โ€œIf you love me, you will keep my commandments.
And I will ask the Father,
and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always,
the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept,
because it neither sees nor knows him.
But you know him, because he remains with you,
and will be in you.
I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
In a little while the world will no longer see me,
but you will see me, because I live and you will live.
On that day you will realize that I am in my Father
and you are in me and I in you.
Whoever has my commandments and observes them
is the one who loves me.
And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father,
and I will love him and reveal myself to him.โ€

Homily Reflection
Fr. Ronnie Urbano
May 3, Fifth Sunday of Easter

โ€œThere are so many voices telling us where to go, what to believe, who to become. Some sound convincing. Some feel right in the moment. And sometimes, we find ourselves lost trying to follow all of them at once.

Then we hear the words: โ€œI am the way, the truth, and the life.โ€

Not just a suggestion. Not just one option among many.

But something steady, something unchanging, something we can hold on to when everything else feels uncertain.

Because if weโ€™re honest, we have tried to find our own way. We have followed what felt right, what was easy, what made sense at the time. But those paths donโ€™t always lead to peace. Sometimes, they only leave us more confused, more empty, more tired.

And so we begin to learn that following Jesus isnโ€™t about having all the answers.

Itโ€™s about trusting the One who is the answer.

That truth isnโ€™t something we can shape based on how we feel.
That life isnโ€™t something we can fully build on our own.

Because in the end, everything else can be taken awayโ€”plans, security, even the things we thought would make us happy.

But Him? He remains.

And maybe the invitation is simple, but not easy:
to stop chasing every other wayโ€ฆ
and choose to walk with Him.

Not perfectly. Not all at once.
But one step at a time.โ€

Reading 1
Acts 6:1-7
As the number of disciples continued to grow,
the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews
because their widows
were being neglected in the daily distribution.
So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said,
"It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table.
Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men,
filled with the Spirit and wisdom,
whom we shall appoint to this task,
whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer
and to the ministry of the word."
The proposal was acceptable to the whole community,
so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit,
also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas,
and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism.
They presented these men to the apostles
who prayed and laid hands on them.
The word of God continued to spread,
and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly;
even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith.

Reading 2
1 Peter 2:4-9
Beloved:
Come to him, a living stone, rejected by human beings
but chosen and precious in the sight of God,
and, like living stones,
let yourselves be built into a spiritual house
to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
For it says in Scripture:
Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion,
a cornerstone, chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame.
Therefore, its value is for you who have faith, but for those without faith:
The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone, and
A stone that will make people stumble,
and a rock that will make them fall.
They stumble by disobeying the word, as is their destiny.

You are "a chosen race, a royal priesthood,
a holy nation, a people of his own,
so that you may announce the praises" of him
who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Gospel
John 14:1-12
Jesus said to his disciples:
"Do not let your hearts be troubled.
You have faith in God; have faith also in me.
In my Father's house there are many dwelling places.
If there were not,
would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you,
I will come back again and take you to myself,
so that where I am you also may be.
Where I am going you know the way."
Thomas said to him,
"Master, we do not know where you are going;
how can we know the way?"
Jesus said to him, I am the way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.
If you know me, then you will also know my Father.
From now on you do know him and have seen him."
Philip said to him,
"Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us."
Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you for so long a time
and you still do not know me, Philip?
Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.
How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?
The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own.
The Father who dwells in me is doing his works.
Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me,
or else, believe because of the works themselves.
Amen, amen, I say to you,
whoever believes in me will do the works that I do,
and will do greater ones than these,
because I am going to the Father."

As the Church joyfully honors the Month of Mary, we are invited to deepen our devotion to the one who always leads us closer to Jesus. In a special way, this Marian month beautifully coincides with the celebration of the Feast of Mary Help of Christians, the beloved Patroness of the Salesian Society and the guiding Mother of Don Boscoโ€™s mission for the young.

With grateful hearts, let us journey through this month under her mantle of protection, entrusting to her our families, our youth, and our community. May Mary Help of Christians continue to inspire us to live with faith, hope, and loving service.

Homily Reflection
Fr. Favie Faldas
Fourth Sunday of Easter, April 26

There are so many doors in life. Some look inviting. Some promise relief, escape, even happiness. And sometimes, without realizing it, we try to force our way through them, thinking theyโ€™ll finally lead us somewhere better.

But then we hear Jesus say, โ€œI am the gate.โ€

Not a gate. Not one of many options.
THE gate.

And suddenly, itโ€™s not just about finding the right path anymore. Itโ€™s about finding Him.

Because following Jesus isnโ€™t just about direction. Itโ€™s about relationship. Itโ€™s not just choosing the right door, but choosing the One who stands at itโ€ฆ waiting, inviting, never forcing.

There are days we hesitate. Days we want easier doorsโ€”the ones that donโ€™t ask too much, the ones that donโ€™t require trust or surrender. But those doors often lead to more confusion, more emptiness.

Jesus, the Gate, is different. He is open, but entering means trusting. It means letting go of control. It means believing that even when the path is narrow or uncertain, it leads to life.

And maybe thatโ€™s what weโ€™re learning nowโ€ฆ
That not every open door is meant for us.
But the one He offers, the one that is Him, will always lead us home.
