Today, February 1, is the memorial of Blessed Benedict Daswa.

The future beato was born Tshimangadzo Samuel Daswa in 1946 in South Africa.
He was a member of the Lemba tribe. Since this tribe followed Jewish laws, rituals, and traditions, they were known as the “Black Jews.”

He got the name “Benedict” when he converted to the Catholic faith in 1963, inspired as he was by St. Benedict.
Also, his life motto was
“Ora et labora” or “Pray and work.”
Indeed, he devoted much of his time to prayer and working for South Africa’s Catholic Church.
He served as teacher, catechist and local youth animator. Benedict helped build the first Catholic Church in his area. He also became principal of his school, popular local leader, and advisor to area civil authorities.

Between late 1989 and early 1990, his village suffered from heavy rains. The village elders said it was due to magic, and required everyone to pay taxes to stop the magic. Benedict reasoned that it was not magic, but it was Mother Nature. Having said that, he declared that no taxes should be paid. This angered those who believed in magic and witchcraft.

On his way home in February 1990, Benedict was ambushed by these believers and was stoned.
As if this was not enough, he was beaten up, hit on the head with blunt instruments, and poured boiling water in his ears and nose.

Benedict’s final words: “God, into Your Hands receive my spirit.”

He was beatified in 2015 in South Africa by Cardinal Angelo Amato. Benedict’s mother, children, and the priest who baptized him were present at his beatification.

May isang bata sa kahirapan ng buhay ay walang laruan kundi ang saranggola lamang. Minsan, sumulat siya kay Hesus.

Dinikit niya ang sulat sa saranggola at pinalipad para mabasa ni Jesus.

"Dear Jesus, bigyan mo naman ako ng pangarap kong bisikleta."

Ngunit mababa pa ang lipad at naisip niya na baka hindi mabasa ni Jesus. Kaya hinabaan pa ang tali pero di pa rin makaabot sa langit.

Napaisip ang bata.
"Jesus, mahal ko po ang saranggola pero kailangan kong bitiwan para makaabot saiyo ang kahilingan ko."

Mahirap man sa loob, binitiwan ng bata ang tali ng saranggola.

Marami tayong pinapahalagahan sa buhay na madalas mahirap bitiwan. Pwedeng tao, kayamanan, relasyon, lugar, pangyayari, kapangyarihan, posisyon, trabaho, atbp.

Mahirap iwanan at talikuran.
Mahirap tumalikod sa kasalanang nagdudulot ng aliw.

Nasa "new normal" tayo dahil sa Pandemya.
Nahihirapan ang iba at hinahanap ang nakasanayang buhay.

Ang sabi ng Ebanghelyo:
Talikuran kung nais nating sumunod kay Jesus ng buong puso, isip at pagkatao.
Mahal nina Simon & Andres (mga mangingisda) ang lambat, ngunit iiwan ito para sumunod kay Jesus.
Iniwan nina Santiago & Juan ang bangka, ang amang si Zebedeo at kanilang pamilya upang sumama kay Jesus. Malaking sakripisyo, pero may magandang pangako si Jesus, PAGBABAGONG-BUHAY!

Ano ang "Goal" natin ngayong 2021? Bitiwan na.
Iwanan na.
Para sa tunay na pagbabago at pagsunod kay Hesus.

December 28

Holy children of God, you suffered death before you enjoyed the fullness of life, yet now you rest and reign with Christ in glory. Look down from heaven on our poor earth where children like you still suffer and die at the hands of those blinded by this world. Surround and protect the innocent and when our own poor efforts fail, comfort and console the parents whose loss we can hardly comprehend or imagine. We commend to your joyful company in heaven the souls of all dear children who have died. Help us to become like you, simple, pure and true! Teach us to accept love and blessings like you!
Fill us with the joy and laughter of life to remind us that to such babes as you, the Kingdom of Heaven belongs.

As we thank God in our celebration of the Dedication of this magnificent Manila Cathedral whose every facet proclaims the glory of God, we thank God now for the opportunity we have to restore it to its glory once again and to reminisce the testimonies of faith of all those who entered here so that generation after generation will be able to come to this Holy Temple built on the foundation of Jesus Christ, so that the tottering world, through us, may be firmly anchored to our Rock and our Salvation through the maternal care of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.
