Today is the Solemnity of the Annunciation
and in the silence of Nazareth, Mary gave her fiat—her total “yes”—which changed the course of history. In the words of St. Bernard of Clairvaux: “The angel awaits your answer… We too are waiting, O Lady, for your word of compassion.”
And on this solemn feast, let us imitate Our Lady’s surrender and trust. Let us say “yes” to God in the hidden moments, the difficult crosses, and the quiet sacrifices.

May we unite our lives more deeply to Christ through her.

Hail Mary, full of grace…

A Hundred and Four years of Celebration and beyond A Legionaries gift of Yes to Our Blessed Mother.

On September 7, 1921, the eve of Our Lady's birthday, 15 women, mostly in their late teens and early twenties, Fr. Michael Toher, curate of St. Nicholas, and Frank Duff met at Myra House to discuss how the group could better serve the poor. One of the women dressed the meeting table with a white table cloth, Joe Gabbett's statue of the Immaculate Conception, 2 vases of flowers and 2 lighted candles. During the meeting, the group asked the Holy Spirit's guidance, prayed the Rosary and discussed future projects. The women wished to visit poor female patients at nearby Union Hospital, just as the men of St. Patrick's Conference were already visiting male patients. Father Toher gave a short inspirational talk. Each participant accepted a particular assignment at the hospital and agreed to report the result of their efforts at the following week's meeting. The decided to call themselves The Association of Our Lady of Mercy and elected Mrs. Elizabeth Kirwan, the group's senior member, President.

That was the first praesidium meeting of the Legion of Mary....and the rest is history.

First greeting of Pope Leo XIV

Peace be with you all!

Dear brothers and sisters: This is the first greeting of the Risen Christ, the good shepherd who gave his life for the sheep of God. I also want this greeting of peace to enter your heart, to reach your families, to all people, wherever they are, to all peoples, to all the earth. Peace be upon you!

This is the peace of the Risen Christ, an unarmed peace and a disarmamenting, humble and persevering peace, that comes from God, from God who loves us all unconditionally. We still keep in our ears that weak but always brave voice of Pope Francis who blessed Rome!

The Pope who blessed Rome gave his blessing to the world, the whole world, that morning of Easter Day. Allow me to continue that same blessing: God loves us well, God loves you all, and evil will not prevail! We are all in God's hands.

Therefore, without fear, joined hand in hand with God and among ourselves, let us go forward: we are Christ's disciples, Christ goes before us. The world needs your light. Humanity needs Him as a bridge to be reached by God and His love.

Help yourselves too, each other, to build bridges, with dialogue, with meeting, uniting us all to be one people always in peace.

Thank you, Pope Francis! I want to thank also all the cardinal brothers who have chosen me to be Peter's successor and walk alongside you as a unity Church always seeking peace and justice, always trying to work as faithful men and women to Jesus Christ, without fear, to proclaim the Gospel, to be missionaries.

I am a son of St. Augustine, Augustine, who said, "With you I am a Christian and for you a bishop." In that sense we can all walk together towards the homeland that God has prepared for us.

To the Church of Rome, a special greeting! We must seek together how to be a missionary Church, a Church that builds bridges of dialogue, always open to receive, like this square, with arms open to all, to all those who are in need of our charity, our presence, dialogue and love.

(In original, in Spanish) And if I may also, a word, a greeting to all those... , and in particular to my beloved diocese of Chiclayo, in Peru, where a faithful people have accompanied their bishop, shared their faith and given so much, so much, to remain a faithful Church of Jesus Christ.

To all of you, brothers and sisters from Rome, from Italy, from all over the world: we want to be a synodal Church, a Church that walks, a Church that always seeks peace, always seeks charity, always seeks to be close, especially to those who are suffering.

Today is the day of the supplication to Our Lady of Pompeii. Our Mother Mary always wants to walk with us, be near, help us with her intercession and with her love.

So I want to pray with you. Let us pray together for this new mission, for the whole Church, for peace in the world and ask this special grace to Mary, our Mother. Hail Mary.

SERVANT OF GOD FRANK DUFF
Founder of the Legion of Mary (June 7, 1889 – November 7, 1980)
Frank Duff was born in Dublin, Ireland, on June 7, 1889. He entered the Civil Service at the age of 18 and had a distinguished career. His free time he at first dedicated to sporting activities, but at the age of 24 he joined the Society of St. Vincent de Paul where he was led to a deeper commitment to his Catholic faith and at the same time he acquired a great sensitivity to the needs of the poor and underprivileged.
Along with a group of Catholic women and Fr. Michael Toher, a priest of the Dublin Archdiocese, he formed the first branch of what was to become the first praesidium of the Legion of Mary on September 7, 1921. From that date until his death, November 7, 1980, he guided the world-wide extension of the Legion with heroic dedication. He attended the Second Vatican Council as a lay observer. He died on the evening of November 7, 1980 aged 91 years. His Cause for Beatification was introduced by His Eminence Desmond Cardinal Connell, the then Archbishop of Dublin, in June 1996.
His profound insights into the role of the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Virgin Mary in the plan of Redemption, and the role of the lay faithful in the mission of the Church, are reflected in the Official Handbook of the Legion of Mary, which is almost entirely his composition.
FRANK DUFF
Getting To Know Him.
Frank Duff had an insatiable love of reading. He read (and spoke fluently) in English, French and Latin. He regretted that he had not kept up his knowledge of his native Irish, although he had gained first prize in his class in that subject. Nine bookcases in his house contain a huge variety of books, many of them about the Blessed Mother. He frequently arrived home with yet another bundle of books and it is said that his mother vowed that she would one day see books making their way down the stairs.
Nancy Huddock in her ‘Short Biography’ declared Frank Duff to have a penetrating and precise mind, a remarkable memory and the moral courage to face up to a problem as he saw it. He went to Blackrock College, a private school run by the Holy Ghost Fathers in Dublin. He had a strong dislike for ‘Maths’ believing that he had no aptitude for that subject and preferred instead history and languages, especially the Classics. He was one of the school’s most brilliant pupils.
Frank was athletic and strong, an exceptionally good runner and cyclist, fond of boxing, tennis and cricket. Cycling was, indeed, his favorite. He longed to get away for cycling trips around his beloved Ireland, a practice he continued until his death. He had a letter statue of the Blessed Mother which he affixed to his camera when he used it and a miraculous medal on the handlebars of his bicycle (these last two items are on view in his house which is open to the public).
As for his experience with cars – he was in one once when the engine exploded, he never drove again! He preferred the two-wheel variety of transportation! Frank had a marvelous sense of humor, but was shy during his schooldays, even at Blackrock College. This shyness stayed with him and mellowed in time into a gracious gentleness that was one of his loveliest characteristics.

IN HIS OWN WORDS:
Dreaming Dreams of Conquest!
‘Conquest comes through Mary,’ says the present Holy Father. And just now we are engaged in a special dream of conquest. We are looking out over Asia and wondering how we are going to set the mother-influence of Mary flowing over that Continent where lives the greater part of the human race; few of them Christians.
As the chief ingredient of this dream of faith we are looking to the Philippines. That country, declared in the 1930s to be so religiously collapsed as to be virtually impossible of restoration, was rapidly enough brought back to practice by the Legion. So much so in fact that the then Archbishop O’Doherty of Manila could propose to it the converting of the East. ‘Why not?’ he said, ‘Are you not the only Catholic nation in the Orient?’
When originally we heard that sublime suggestion, it at once came to our minds that more than a thousand years before, Ireland had accomplished a feat of no less impossibility in restoring Europe to Faith after its collapse with the Roman Empire. That was the epic from which we have derived the name: Peregrinatio pro Christo.
Father Aedan McGrath is out there now. He is working along with the Filipino authorities to mobilize, as they say, a great army of peaceful apostles who will pe*****te Asia and perhaps also the multi-thousand Islands of the Pacific. Legionaries are responding eagerly and soon enough perhaps the first ones will be beginning to move off on their epoch-making adventure. What it is going to land them into – one can only just imagine. Will their more simple ways bring them across frontiers which would effectively stop us, and enable them to exist and work where we could not? The very thought of it is thrilling and that is why I give it to you. Likewise for example so that you may be tempted to follow it.
Excerpt from Bro. Frank Duff’’s speech delivered at the Annual Peregrinatio Conference on 25th October 1980, his last public address to Legionaries before his death on 7th November 1980. This text is part of Chapter 43, Final Testament to the Legion, of the book ‘Victory Through Mary’.

"The priest is not a priest for himself; he does not give himself absolution; he does not administer the Sacraments to himself. He is not for himself, HE IS A PRIEST FOR YOU.
When you see a Priest, think of Our Lord Jesus Christ."
