MIGHTY MAN OF VALOR

Gideon's account is an intriguing one, which has a lot to say to us today. I would like to highlight two characteristics of Gideon. Because of these qualities, God chose him to lead the children of Israel to victory over Midianites.

First, Gideon was a brave man. We notice his bravery as he threshed wheat by the winepress, and hid it from the Midianites. We observe his bravery when he destroyed the alter of Baal, and then erected one to the Lord and offered a sacrifice on it. Later, we see him going against the multitudes of the enemy with only three hundred men. Truly, Gideon was a brave man.

Secondly, Gideon was a humble man. He considered himself poor and the least in his father's house. Gideon needed a sure sign that God would be with him. He recognized that in his own strength he could not face the enemy. Gideon demonstrated humility when he acknowledged that God was the One who would deliver Israel.

We need men, women, boys, and girls who are brave and humble- brave, in that they are willing to stand for right in a world that is bent on doing evil; humble, in recognizing that without God we are no match for the enemy. Remember, Christ is the victory! Bravely, but very humbly, go forward against the foe.

WALKING OR SINKING?

"But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me." -Matthew 14:30

The life of Peter has been a real inspiration to me. It seems like Peter did everything with enthusiasm! It even got him into some tight places at times.

In today's reading, the disciples had just finished feeding the five thousand, when Jesus told them to get into the boat and go across the sea. The disciples, no doubt, were tired after the long day and ready for a time to relax. Jesus also needed time to be alone; he went into the mountains to pray.

The disciples were out on the sea and it became boisterous. In the middle of this situation, Jesus came to them walking on the water. When the disciples first saw Him, they cried in fear because they thought they were seeing a spirit; but Jesus called to them and told them, "Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid." Then we see Peter's response, "Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water." Jesus told him to come, and Peter stepped overboard and began to walk towards Jesus. On his way to meet Jesus, Peter was distracted by the waves around him and began to sink.

So often this happens to us. We take our attention off Jesus, and we end up sinking instead of walking with Him as we should.

The story does not end there, however. As Peter called out for help, the Lord reached down and pulled him up. That is what He wants to do for everyone. The next time you feel like you are sinking, call out to the Lord, and He will pull you out.

NOISES, OR A STILL SMALL VOICE.

"And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice." -1 Kings 19:12

We live in a world full of voices, and much noise. Along with these comes much confusion. God is not the author of this confusion.

Satan is the prince of the power if the air, and he is using his power over men's ears and eyes to influence and deceive people, and to drown out God's still small voice. Much of Satan's influence comes through contemporary music, television, radio, and videos.

Recently, a grandmother related hoe her grandson had made a nasty remark to a lady. He had picked up the phrase from a video they had watched. The grandson was told to go back to the lady and apologize. Perhaps it also would have been in order for the boy's parents to have apologized to their son for setting an evil thing before his eyes. How confusing it must be to children to be taught two opposing ideals!

Returning to God, we must learn the beauty of quiet meditation alone with God, so we can hear His still, small voice.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE FURTHERANCE OF THE GOSPEL

"The things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel."-Philippians 1:12

Paul had no idea what would take place when he responded to the Macedonian call (Acts 16:9). But, being led by the Sprit, he was willing to accept whatever happened and to be ready to turn every incident into an advantage for furthering the Gospel. The stopover at Philippi started out as a pleasant experience in the furtherance of the Gospel, when the Lord opened people's hearts and they came to faith (Acts 16:15). However, as time went on, things happened which grieved Paul. Because he obeyed as the Spirit led him, both he and Silas ended up in prison (Acts 16:16-24). Still being led by the Spirit, and wanting to magnify the Lord, Paul and Silas spent their first night in prison praying and singing praises unto God. We can imagine how the hearts of the prisoners who heard them were touched by the Gospel message, which they had never before heard.

After the earthquake which shook the foundation and opened the doors of the prison, another opportunity for the furtherance of the Gospel presented itself, and Paul seized it, too. The jailer, who was intending to commit su***de, became a believer instead, and received baptism, along with all that were in his house (Acts 16:25-32).

Several years later, when Paul wrote the letter to the Philippians, he was again imprisoned, this time at Rome. He undoubtedly took advantage of every opportunity in Rome to further the Gospel as he testified to prison guards and to everyone he met.

May you and I turn the happenings in our lives into opportunities for the furtherance of the Gospel.

GARDEN MEDITATIONS

After a number of years of less than satisfactory results from her garden, my good wife turned the gardening over to me. Although I am not much of a gardener, I am a compulsive w**d puller. While my hands (and my hoe) may be busy, working in the garden gives opportunities to meditate. It occurred to me that gardens are like people's minds. Some gardens are clean and well-tended. It is obvious that much effort goes into enriching the soil. Things are well-watered, and everything looks lush and green. The rows are straight and neat. Weeds are kept to a minimum. Every effort is made to ensure a good harvest.

So should be the minds of those assuming the name of Christ: clean and well-tended. It is enriching to converse with saints like this. Their outlook is optimistic and uplifting. They keep "w**ds" to a minimum by filling their minds with good things. They are careful to read only uplifting or inspiring material. Their music inspires, and honors the living God. They look forward to everlasting life as their harvest. Your imagination can picture the other type of garden.

Let us tend the gardens of our minds as carefully as we tend the gardens in our yards.

RASH WORDS

Jephthah's rash words brought him to a very sad time in life. He made a very wrong vow, because of hastiness and thoughtlessness.

Perhaps Jephthah's poor companions (Judge 11:3) influenced his thoughts and set him up to make his rash statement. The Bible tells us that evil communications (companions) corrupt good manners (morals). By the same token, we also know that good companions help build strong character qualities.

In Jephthah's vow to God, he said, "If thou shalt without fail deliver . . . then it shall be, that . . . I will . . ." Jephthah bargained with God. He promised to do something for God, if God gave him the victory. And yet, it appears that God had already promised Jephthah the victory, and that He had laid out the conditions for that victory. Jephthah would have been much wiser to accept God's promise and to give thanks.

We can learn from Jephthah's example and put into practice what the Bible teaches: not being rash with our mouths, but being slow to speak.

"For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven." -Psalm 119:89

Why are the Scriptures so valuable?
The Scriptures are valuable because they are inspired by God.

In 2 Peter 1:21 we read, "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will or man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." Our Bible reading for today says the Scriptures are profitable for doctrine. They teach and instruct us in that which is true. They show us the plan of salvation and tell us of our perfect example: Jesus Christ.

It also says the Scriptures are profitable for reproof or correction. Through the preaching of the Scriptures, we are convicted and reproved when something in our lives is amiss. The last part of 1 Corinthians 1:21 says, "It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe." It is through receiving and applying the teachings of the Scriptures that we can be saved.

The Scripture is profitable for instructing the saints toward perfection. The man of God is fed by the Scripture. It is a perfect rule of faith and practice.

O, that we would love the Holy Scriptures more! May they grow more precious every day as we daily feast on them!

A MIGHT-HAVE-BEEN.

"Whosoever shall humble himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." -Matthew 18:4

Jesus called Judas Iscariot to be one of His closest disciples. Judas followed Jesus for three years, but failed in his commitment to his Master. Looking only for a good life on this earth and freedom from Roman rule, when he realized this weren't going to happen, Judas went out and hanged himself. What a tragic might-have-been!

What is a might-have-been? A might-have-been is someone who has the potential to do something for God but fails to allow God to work through him. All of us have the potential of contributing to God's kingdom, but a might-have-been is a great disappointment to God and others.

How can one avoid being a might-have-been? Jesus said that even the one who merely provides a child with a cup of cold water, would not lose his reward - or, become a might-have-been. A mother caring for her children and a father bringing up his children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord escape becoming might-have-beens. The boy or girl who learns to be obedient to parents and to God is someone in the Kingdom of God. You do not have to be a might-have-been. You can, by God's grace, be someone fit for the Master's use.

We are not all called to do a conspicuous work, but we are all called to an important work. At the end of time, God will recognize those who are faithful in His kingdom. We do not have to become might-have-beens.

GOD'S WAYS ARE NOT ALWAYS OUR WAYS.

"Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?" -Matthew 6:30

If you think you can control the future, think again.

Once there was a family in a financial bind, and the father thought that if he would work more hours, they could get ahead. They prayed about his plan, and he promised that things would be different in the near future.

God heard their prayers, but He answered differently than they expected. The father had an accident. He suffered a broken leg and torn ligaments, which resulted in his being unable to work for four months.

What would the family do now? God's people provided for them in all areas, and God received the praise. When payments came due, the exact amount was there, and more food came in than they normally had to eat.

Both the family and the church received God's blessings. And His promise was kept to "never leave [us], nor forsake [us]." So let us trust in Him for our everyday needs, whether large or small. Give God the glory He deserves, and He will bless you for it.

THE POWER OF GOD

"God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect." -2 Samuel 22:33

Recently we went to help in the cleanup after a tornado. Arriving at our destination, we found large trees lying all over the yard; some were three feet in diameter. In the afternoon, we helped a farmer clean debris out of his bean field. We found an assortment of objects, from pictures to logo, scattered over the field.

When the day was finished, I stood in awe as I thought of the power revealed in the tornado. I felt so small and insignificant as I looked at what God's power can do. His power has no limit. Thinking back over the day, I had to ask myself, "Who am I, that I would dare to stand against this mighty, wonderful, powerful God who can at any moment move mountains if He wishes?" Friends, we are the losers if we in any way resist God.

There is another power of God- the power to save lost souls through Jesus Christ. This power becomes available to us as we surrender to Him. Have you experienced the trill of being one with Him in Christ? Have the big tress and debris been removed from your life? Do you feel His power moving through you?

THE BLESSEDNESS OF FORGIVENESS

"Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered." - Psalm 32:1

When was the last time you thought about your debt of sin? Who is responsible for that debt? Could you ever "work off" that debt? Has it been paid? What have you done about it? Are you still guilty before God, or are you free?

Praise God, the price has been paid! What a blessing! What a privilege! We could not ever pay off our debt of sin. Never! But the blood of Jesus takes away that sin and sets us free to serve Him.

Psalm 32:9 instructs us to not be as the horse or mule, with no understanding. God desires a willing sacrifice of ourselves and our wills- a complete surrender.

Verse 11 says, "Shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart." Where is our rejoicing? Is it being heard? What is our testimony? Are we shouting with the upright?

Friends, has God blessed His people? Indeed He has! Let us trust in the Lord and be glad in Him. Then our hearts and lives can overflow with His blessing.

TAKE IT TO THE LORD IN PRAYER

"Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord." -Exodus 14:13

In 1939-1940, Admiral Richard E. Byrd headed an expedition into Sulzberger Bay, trying to pe*****te the ice of that bay farther than any vessel had reached before.

But their little ship, the USS Bear, became locked in the ice, and they were not able to move forward or backward. They could not use their sails, and their 600 horsepower auxiliary diesel engine was not powerful enough to free them. After he had studied their case, Admiral Byrd told his lieutenant and navigator that they would need to exercise patience. "What we need in the Antarctic is patienece to wait and let the wind and the tide have a chance to change." And that is what happened. The wind changed, the ice loosened, and they were able to go on.

Sometimes situations arise in our lives- they may be personal, in our families, or in our congregations- and we feel stuck. We cannot see any way through our problem. All our frustrations and struggles do not seem to help. In fact, they may even hinder us and get us in deeper.

But we need not give up. We can wait, and with patience and prayer leave our affairs in the hands of the Lord. He sees our difficulties and hears our prayers. And He is able to get us on the right track again.
