Cáceres Jubilee in Retrospect
1951: THE FIRST ARCHBISHOP: MOST REV. PEDRO P. SANTOS

356 years of history. One historic moment. On June 29, 1951, Pope Pius XII’s bull Quo in Philippina Republica elevated Cáceres to a Metropolitan Archdiocese — and Bishop Pedro P. Santos became its first Archbishop. His consecration day as Archbishop literally fell on his birthday, and it happened to be the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul

Born in Porac, Pampanga, in 1889, Santos wasn’t Bikolnon by blood. He became one by devotion — leading our Church through war, rebuilding, and renewal until his death in 1965.

His tenure, in three acts:
He built. Ateneo de Naga (1940), Sta. Monica’s Academy in Baao, and the Minor Seminary in Sorsogon all trace back to him.

He rebuilt. After WWII left the Cathedral, the episcopal palace, and parish schools in ruins, Santos led the reconstruction of them all.

He honored Inâ. His 1946 and 1949 Marian Congresses marked 300 years of “La Naval” and 25 years since Peñafrancia’s Canonical Coronation.

One more first: on March 12, 1952, Santos received the sacred pallium at Naga Cathedral — only the second such ceremony in our history.
75 years later, we remember him simply: the shepherd who rebuilt our stones and strengthened our souls.
