Malipayong pagsaulog sa atong 63rd Parochial and Town Fiesta!

The Church’s New Year’s Day is the first Sunday of Advent. The word Advent comes from the Latin adventus, which means “coming” or “arrival.” Advent prepares everyone for the Christmas season by reminding us of the birth of Jesus.

During Advent, we will find that the Priests wear Purple Vestments during Mass. The Priests wear Purple because it is also a time for Adults to fast and pray in preparation of Jesus' Birth and to remind us, little ones to keep in mind that Jesus is waiting to be born in our homes and our hearts.

The Advent Wreath is the widely recognize symbol of advent. The wreath is made of a circle of evergreen branches laid flat to symbolize eternal life. The circle of the wreath reminds Christian of God, His eternity and endless mercy, which has no beginning or end. The green of the wreath speaks of the hope that Christian have in God, the hope of newness, of renewal, of eternal life.

The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent, and one candle each Sunday. Three of the candles are purple because the color violet is a liturgical color that signifies a time of prayer, penance, and sacrifice.

The first candle, which is purple, symbolizes hope. It is sometimes called the “Prophecy Candle” in remembrance of the prophets, especially Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ. It represents the expectation felt in anticipation of the coming Messiah.

The second candle, also purple, represents faith. It is called the “Bethlehem Candle” as a reminder of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem.

The third candle is pink and symbolizes joy. It is called the “Shepard’s Candle,” and is pink because rose is a liturgical color for joy. The third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday and is meant to remind us of the joy that the world experienced at the birth of Jesus, as well as the joy that the faithful have reached the midpoint of Advent.

On the fourth week of Advent, we light the final purple candle to mark the final week of prayer and penance as we wait for the birth of our Savior. This final candle, the “Angel’s Candle,” symbolizes peace. It reminds us of the message of the angels: “Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men.”

THE MEANING OF THE 4 ADVENT CANDLES

In Catholic tradition, the four Sundays of Advent symbolize hope, peace, joy, and love, each representing a vital aspect of our spiritual preparation for Christ’s coming.

The first Sunday, Hope, calls us to trust in God's promises and anticipate His arrival with faith, reminding us of the prophetic hope expressed by Isaiah.

The second Sunday, Peace, emphasizes reconciliation and the peace that Christ brings to our hearts and the world, echoing the angel’s message of peace at His birth.

The third Sunday, Joy, celebrates the joyful anticipation of Christ’s coming, often highlighted by the lighting of the pink or rose candle, symbolizing the joy of the Gospel and the approach of Christmas.

The fourth Sunday, Love, underscores God's infinite love manifested in the Incarnation, urging us to emulate Christ’s love through our actions and preparations.

Together, these virtues guide us in spiritual readiness, drawing us closer to the mystery of Christ’s coming at Christmas.

𝐕𝐈𝐕𝐀! 𝐂𝐇𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆!

Today, we celebrate Jesus Christ, our eternal King, who reigns with love, mercy, and justice. As the titular patron of the Diocese of Tagum, Christ the King guides our shepherds, protects our parishes, and inspires every faithful to live with humility, service, and devotion.

His kingship reminds us that true greatness is measured not by power or status, but by love, sacrifice, and service to others. Under His patronage, the Diocese is called to grow in faith, hope, and charity, bearing witness to the Gospel in our daily lives.

This feast also marks the end of the liturgical year, a time to reflect on the ways Christ has reigned in our hearts and communities. As we close this chapter, we prepare to enter Advent, a season of hope and joyful expectation, trusting that Christ continues to guide and inspire us.

Let us renew our devotion to Christ the King, our Patron, and pray that His reign continues to guard, guide, and bless the Diocese of Tagum, so that His kingdom of justice, peace, and love may flourish among us.
