**Liturgical note: The Solemnity of Pentecost marks the 50th Day of Easter, marking the culmination of the season. It is mandatory that the Sequence *****“Veni, Sancte Spiritus”***** be proclaimed after the 2nd Reading, before the Alleluia. If the parish/chapel will celebrate its Vespers II for this great feast, the Paschal Candle is extinguished and placed in the baptistry/sacristy afterwards. If there is no Evening Prayer II, then the said rite may be done once the last Mass for Pentecost Sunday ends.**

**INTRODUCTION**
On the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit opened to all peoples the knowledge of God and brought together the many languages of the earth in profession of the one faith. Announcing the peace that comes with his victory over death, Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit with the power to forgive and conquer sin. Like the apostles, we are strengthened by the Spirit to face the challenges of the world. The Holy Spirit showers us with gifts.

**INTRODUCTION**
When Jesus is with the disciples, he is their friend and defender. But after his death and Resurrection, Jesus will return to the Father. At the Last Supper, he tells the disciples not to be sad because he will not leave them orphans. He will send them the Holy Spirit who will act in his name. In this Eucharistic celebration, the Holy Spirit is with us. Let us open our hearts to his inspiration.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN: FLORES DE MAYO & SANTACRUZAN

• FLORES DE MAYO

—Flores de Mayo, also called Flores de Maria, is among the most cherished religious traditions in the Philippines. Celebrated throughout the entire month of May, it is a Catholic devotion where the faithful offer flowers, prayers, and songs in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is especially vibrant in many provinces, reflecting the deep Marian devotion of the Filipino people.

—The custom of dedicating a special period to Mary can be traced back to the Baroque era. Although it was not originally fixed in May, the practice involved daily acts of devotion for thirty days, all centered on expressing love and honor for the Virgin Mary.

• SANTACRUZAN

—The Santacruzan is often mistaken as merely a parade of beauty and elegance, but at its core, it is a meaningful religious tradition. While it is colorful and festive, it should not be confused with Flores de Mayo, as it is a procession rather than a month-long devotional practice.

—Its name comes from the Spanish words “santa” (holy) and “cruz” (cross). The Santacruzan is a religious-historical procession held in various communities during May. It commemorates the search for the Holy Cross by Queen Helena, together with her son, Emperor Constantine. Tradition tells that three crosses were discovered, and the true cross was identified through a miraculous sign of healing. The procession culminates in a celebration that recalls the triumph of their sacred mission.

✝️ Ten Hallmarks of the Roman Catholic Church

The Roman Catholic Church is the largest Christian Church in the world, marked by distinct spiritual, theological, and historical characteristics. Here are ten defining hallmarks:

---

🕊️ 1. Apostolic Succession

The Church traces its authority back to the Apostles, especially Saint Peter, whom Catholics recognize as the first Pope. This unbroken line continues through the bishops today.

---

⛪ 2. Papal Authority

The Pope, Bishop of Rome, is the visible head of the Church. He is regarded as the successor of Saint Peter and the spiritual leader of Catholics worldwide.

---

📖 3. Sacred Scripture and Tradition

Catholics believe Divine Revelation comes through both the Bible and Sacred Tradition, interpreted authentically by the Church’s teaching authority.

---

🕯️ 4. The Seven Sacraments

The Church celebrates seven sacraments as channels of grace: Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony.

---

🍞 5. The Holy Eucharist

The Eucharist is the “source and summit” of Christian life, believed to be the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.

---

🙏 6. Devotion to the Saints

Catholics honor the saints and seek their intercession, especially Virgin Mary, who holds a special place in the Church.

---

🏛️ 7. Unity and Universality (Catholicity)

The word “Catholic” means universal—the Church is for all people, in all nations, united in one faith.

---

📜 8. Magisterium (Teaching Authority)

The Pope and bishops form the Magisterium, responsible for authentically teaching and safeguarding the faith.

---

🕊️ 9. Liturgical Worship

The Church emphasizes structured, sacramental worship—especially the Holy Mass, rooted in ancient tradition and rich symbolism.

---

❤️ 10. Mission and Evangelization

The Church is called to spread the Gospel, serve the poor, and bring Christ’s message to all nations.

---

These hallmarks together define the identity, mission, and spiritual life of the Roman Catholic Church, guiding over a billion faithful around the world.

✝️ What’s Inside the Sacristy?

A sacristy is a special room in a Catholic church, usually located near the sanctuary, where sacred items are kept and where priests and altar servers prepare for Mass.

Inside the sacristy, you will commonly find:

⛪ 1. Sacred Vestments

These are the garments worn during Mass and other liturgical celebrations:

Alb – white robe symbolizing purity

Stole – long narrow cloth worn by clergy

Chasuble – outer garment worn by the priest during Mass

Cincture – rope-like belt

Cassock and Surplice – often worn by altar servers and clergy

---

🍷 2. Sacred Vessels

Used for the celebration of the Eucharist:

Chalice – holds the wine that becomes the Blood of Christ

Paten – small plate for the host

Ciborium – container for consecrated hosts

Cruets – small bottles for wine and water

Monstrance – used for Eucharistic adoration

---

📖 3. Liturgical Books

Books used during worship:

Roman Missal

Lectionary

Book of the Gospels

Sacramental registers (for baptisms, marriages, etc.)

---

🕯️ 4. Other Church Items

Candles and candle lighters

Incense and thurible

Holy water vessel

Bells

Processional cross

Linens (purificators, corporals, altar cloths)

---

🙏 5. Preparation Area

The sacristy also includes:

Mirrors (for vesting properly)

Sink called the sacrarium (drains directly into the earth for reverent disposal of sacred water)

Cabinets and drawers for church supplies

Prayer cards and preparation prayers for clergy

---

🌟 Why Is the Sacristy Important?

The sacristy is often called the “workroom of the church” because it is where everything is prepared carefully and reverently before the celebration of the Holy Mass.

It reminds us that every detail in the liturgy is done with prayer, order, and respect for God’s presence.

✝️ The Holy Trinity

The Holy Trinity is the central mystery of the Christian faith: One God in Three Divine Persons.

These three Persons are:

God the Father – the Creator of heaven and earth

God the Son – , who became man to save us

God the Holy Spirit – the sanctifier and guide of the Church

Though they are three distinct Persons, they are not three gods but one God, equal in power, glory, majesty, and eternity.

The Three Persons of the Trinity

1. God the Father 👑

The Father is the source of all creation.

He created the world out of love and continually cares for all He has made.

Bible Verse:
"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."
— 1:1

2. God the Son ✝️

The Son is , eternally begotten of the Father.

He became human through the Virgin Mary to redeem humanity through His life, death, and resurrection.

Bible Verse:
"The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us."
— 1:14

3. God the Holy Spirit 🔥

The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father (and, in Western Christian tradition, through the Son).

The Spirit strengthens, guides, comforts, and sanctifies believers.

Bible Verse:
"The Advocate, the Holy Spirit... will teach you all things."
— 14:26

A Simple Explanation

Think of the Trinity as:

☀️ The Sun

The sun itself → Father

The light → Son

The warmth → Holy Spirit

This is only a simple comparison; no earthly example fully explains God’s mystery.

The Sign of the Cross

Catholics profess the Trinity whenever they pray:

“In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

Why the Holy Trinity Matters

The Holy Trinity teaches us that God is love and perfect communion.

The Father loves the Son,
the Son loves the Father,
and this divine love is the Holy Spirit.

Through baptism, Christians are invited into this life of divine love.

🙏 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
