Jonah 1
Verses 1–3: One day, Yahweh spoke to Jonah and said, “Go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim against it, because their wickedness has come up before Me.” But instead of obeying, Jonah decided to run away from Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship sailing for Tarshish. After paying the fare, he boarded the ship with the other passengers, hoping that he could escape from Yahweh.

In Verse 10 Jonah told them that he was running away from Yahweh. When the people heard this, they became greatly afraid and said to Jonah, “What a terrible thing you have done!”

Jonah was actually no different from the people of Nineveh. If there was any difference, it was that the sins of the people of Nineveh were visible and openly known, while Jonah's sin was hidden. But both were disobeying the will of God.

When the people on the ship discovered that Jonah was the reason for the terrible storm at sea, he told them to throw him into the sea—as if he was saying, “KILL ME.”

Brothers and sisters, if we feel like dying but it is not yet God's will—because He still has something for us to do—then no matter what happens, He will not take us yet.

The mission God has given you may be one of the reasons why you are still alive today. GOD STILL HAS SOMETHING FOR YOU TO DO. HE IS NOT FINISHED WITH YOU YET!

“NO EASY LIFE FOR A PROPHET”

Amos 7
Verses 12–16: Amaziah then said to Amos, “Enough of that, Prophet! Go back to Judah and preach there. Let them pay you for your preaching. Do not preach anymore here in Bethel, because this is the king’s sanctuary and the royal temple.”

Amos answered, “I was not a prophet, nor did I train to become one in order to be paid. I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore trees. But Yahweh took me away from that work and commanded me to proclaim His message to the people of Israel. So now, listen to what Yahweh says.”

The life of a prophet is not easy. On one hand, a prophet needs to remain close to the Lord in order to hear His words and proclaim them to the people. On the other hand, he also needs to interact with the people he serves, and they do not always want to accept his message or ministry.

It is not surprising that some prophets wanted to give up or step down, including Moses and Jeremiah. Amos faced two kinds of struggles. First, he struggled in his relationship with the Lord; and second, he struggled against the authorities, especially the king and his priest.

We were not called into ministry simply to please people or to listen to what they want. We were called to bring God’s message to the people.

“BE CONCERNED”

Amos 6
• v4 How terrible it will be for you who lie on luxurious beds made of ivory and rest on spacious couches, while feasting on choice lambs and fattened calves.
• v6 You drink w**e from large bowls and use the finest perfumes, but you do not grieve over the destruction of Israel!
• v7 Therefore, you will be the first to go into exile; your feasts and celebrations will come to an end.

False confidence based on expert advice, statistics, and material resources, while ignoring the spiritual dimension of life, is sure to lead to shameful defeat. Being complacent in our faith is dangerous because it deceives us, comes from pride, and leads us to depend on other things rather than on God.

We must be aware of and concerned about what is happening around us, especially about the people created by God. We should not lie comfortably on soft beds while our fellow human beings do not even have a place to sleep. God’s judgment comes when we fail to love and care for His creation.
