Q: WHY WE ARE CALLED AGLIPAYANS? (1/3)
A: "Aglipayan" - one of the three a.k.a. (also known as) names for the members of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente. It was commonly used in Luzon areas particularly in Ilocos Regions wherein Ilocanos are proud to be identified with their hero Gregorio Aglipay.
At first, the word "Aglipayan" was used by the Roman Catholics as an insult and to degrade the Filipino Church insisting that it was founded by Gregorio Aglipay, which is considered as a traitor by the Catholic Church.
Eventually, the word Aglipayan was accepted by the members of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente as their a.k.a. and officially registered by the Church as one of its legal aliases in Securities and Exchange Commission as the following: Aglipayan Church, Aglipayan Catholic Church, and Aglipayan Independent Church. Aglipayans nowadays are associated or defined as nationalist Filipino Christians and IFI members even used it as an easier replacement to the longer name Iglesia Filipina Independiente.
Several dictionaries locally or internationally, even online website refers the word Aglipayan Church as the Iglesia Filipina Independiente. Even residents of a certain locality easily recognizes the word Aglipayan Church rather than its official name Iglesia Filipina Independiente.
While other religious groups or sects feels insulted when they are reffered based on their known founders, such as Manalistas for Iglesia ni Cristo; the members of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente are proud being called as Aglipayan for it was a great name that means Filipino Christian who loves God and Country.
