When President David O. McKay was a young missionary serving in Scotland, he was feeling homesick after being in the field for just a short time. He and his companion had just spent a few hours sightseeing nearby Stirling Castle and were leaving the place when they passed by a building. The building had a stone arch over the front door with a carved inscription that read, "What e'er thou art, act well thy part."

This message—What E’er Thou Art, Act Well Thy Part—was so important and had such an impact on young Elder McKay that he used it for inspiration for the rest of his life. He determined that whatever responsibility he had, he would do his very best.
