John Chapter 2

Theme: Jesus Reveals His Glory

Overview

John 2 records two key events at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry:
1. The Wedding at Cana – Jesus’ first miracle
2. The Cleansing of the Temple – Jesus’ authority and zeal for God’s house

These events reveal who Jesus is, not just what He does.

The Wedding at Cana (John 2:1–11)

Jesus attends a wedding in Cana with His disciples. When the wine runs out, Mary brings the problem to Him. Jesus turns water into wine, performing His first recorded miracle.

Key Observations
• Weddings were major community events—running out of wine was a serious social embarrassment.
• Jesus used ordinary water jars for purification.
• The wine Jesus made was better than the original.

Spiritual Lessons
• Jesus cares about everyday needs, not only “big” spiritual matters.
• Obedience precedes miracles: the servants filled the jars before seeing the result.
• Jesus brings transformation, not just improvement.
• His glory is revealed quietly, not for attention.

“What Jesus provides is always better than what the world offers.”

Reflection Questions
• What “empty jars” do you have that you need to surrender to Jesus?
• Are you willing to obey even when you don’t yet understand?

Cleansing of the Temple (John 2:13–22)

Jesus goes to Jerusalem for Passover and finds the temple filled with merchants and money changers. He drives them out, declaring:

“Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” (v.16)

Key Observations
• The temple had become a place of profit instead of prayer.
• Jesus’ anger was righteous, not sinful.
• He refers to His body as the true temple, pointing to His resurrection.

Spiritual Lessons
• God desires pure worship, not religious business.
• Jesus has authority to cleanse what is corrupt.
• Our bodies are now God’s temple (1 Corinthians 6:19).

True worship requires a clean heart.

Reflection Questions
• Are there areas of your life where worship has become routine or self-serving?
• What might Jesus want to “cleanse” in your heart?

Key Themes in John 2
• Transformation – water to wine
• Obedience – servants acted in faith
• Authority – Jesus over religion and tradition
• Glory revealed – leading disciples

The Gospel of John:
reasons to believe in Jesus

Overview Bible

The Book of John, the fourth Gospel in the New Testament, is about Jesus Christ's divine identity as the Son of God, presenting Him as the eternal Word who became flesh to bring eternal life to believers. It emphasizes Jesus's divinity through powerful miracles ("signs") and "I Am" statements, showing He fulfills Old Testament prophecies and offers salvation, focusing on themes of belief, light, life, and love to invite readers into a saving relationship with Him.

Key Themes & Content:

Jesus's Divinity: John stresses Jesus is God's Son, sharing God's nature, beginning from before creation (the "Word").

"Signs": Seven major miracles (like turning water to wine, raising Lazarus) reveal Jesus's power and glory.
"I Am"" Statements: Jesus declares His divine roles (e.g., "I am the bread of life," "I am the light of the world").
Salvation & Eternal Life: Belief in Jesus as the Messiah grants eternal life and freedom from sin.
The Holy Spirit: Explains the coming of the Comforter (Holy Spirit) after Jesus's departure.

Purpose: To convince readers that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, so they might believe and have life.

Structure:
Prologue (Ch 1): Introduces Jesus as the divine Word.
Book of Signs (Ch 2-12): Jesus's ministry, miracles, and conflicts with opponents.
Book of Glory (Ch 13-20): Jesus's final hours, crucifixion, resurrection, and appearances.
Epilogue (Ch 21): Post-resurrection appearance and commission to Peter.

Greetings UPC Gud-an Church,

I have created a page for our fellowship network, especially for members who are working outside Southern Leyte. This page is dedicated to Bible studies, prayer groups, and fellowship. I believe that fellowship will make our faith stronger in Christ, our Savior.

This page is private, but you may invite others to join. May Jesus bless this page, and may it be an instrument that connects us together in His love.

Please feel free to share your suggestions about our online Bible study.

Thank you.
