If you've started to doubt whether God still moves in the world… but somewhere deep down you still want to believe He does… this account from World War II might be exactly what you need to hear. 👇
Many people have heard the story that Padre Pio once appeared in the sky during World War II and prevented bombs from falling on San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy.
And yes, this story has been shared for decades.
There are testimonies from pilots and military personnel connected to the war who claimed they saw a friar in the sky near San Giovanni Rotondo during bombing missions. Capuchin sources and people close to Padre Pio repeated these accounts for many years. One of the names commonly connected to the story is Bernardo Rosini, an Italian Air Force officer working alongside Allied forces.
According to the testimony later shared, pilots reported seeing a friar with raised hands as they approached the area. Some said they could not complete their bombing runs and turned back instead.
Nearby areas in Foggia were heavily bombed during the war. Yet San Giovanni Rotondo itself was largely spared from direct bombing, which caused many people to connect these events to Padre Pio.
Then came the moment that made the story spread even further.
After the war, Rosini reportedly visited the convent where Padre Pio lived. According to the account, he immediately recognized Padre Pio as the friar he had seen during the mission. Padre Pio is said to have looked at him and said, “So, are you the one who wanted to eliminate us all?”
That quote is widely repeated in Padre Pio biographies and Catholic retellings of the story.
The Church does not require Catholics to believe every private story connected to a saint, including this one. But accounts like these are part of why so many people were drawn to Padre Pio during his lifetime. What the Church officially recognizes is his holiness, his deep union with Christ, the stigmata he carried for decades, and the spiritual impact his life had on countless souls.
And honestly, that is what makes this story interesting to so many people.
Not just whether a miracle happened… but whether modern people are still open to the possibility that God can act in ways beyond what we fully understand.
