Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Señor Jesus Nazareno
January 9
The history of Quiapo Church dates back to 1586, when it was established as a mission outpost, and it became a parish in 1588. The iconic image of Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno—a dark-skinned Christ carved in Mexico—is believed to have arrived with the Augustinian Recollects in 1606. Throughout the centuries, the church and the sacred image survived numerous trials, including devastating fires in 1791 and 1929, powerful earthquakes in 1863 and 1864, and the bombings of World War II. Its spiritual importance was formally recognized by the Vatican as early as 1650, and the transfer of the image to Quiapo in the late 18th century transformed the site into a premier pilgrimage destination for millions of Filipino devotees.
The late 20th and early 21st centuries marked a period of significant ecclesiastical elevation for the shrine. Following a major expansion, the church was declared a Minor Basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1987. More recently, 2023 and 2024 marked historic milestones: the church was elevated to a National Shrine, and January 9 was officially established as a liturgical feast in all Philippine dioceses. Today, under the official title of the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno, the church stands as a testament to the "ardent love" of the Filipino people, continuing the traditions of the Traslacion and the mission of St. John the Baptist Parish.

Let us pray:
Almighty Father,
you willed that your Son
accept death on the cross
so that humanity may be redeemed and live.
The fullness of redemption
and eternal life with you
through Jesus Christ
together with the Holy Spirit
forever and ever. Amen.
