Parish of St. Catherine of Alexandria (Leon, Iloilo, Philippines)

Parish of St. Catherine of Alexandria (Leon, Iloilo, Philippines) The parish was established in 1730 in Camando as a visita of Tigbauan, Iloilo.

The Parish of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, established in 1732 within the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Jaro, serves the 54 barangays of the Municipality of Leon in the province of Iloilo, Philippines In 1738, it was elevated to a full parish under the patronage of Santa Catalina, Virgen y Martir. The current church structure, built in 1869, sits on a hillside overlooking the town plaza. Through

out its history, the church has served as a landmark during times of conflict, housing American forces during the Philippine-American War and later serving as a Japanese station in 1942. After the Mill Hill Missionaries took administration in 1910, the church faced significant challenges: it was burned during World War II and severely damaged by the "Lady Caycay" earthquake on January 25, 1948. Through the enduring faith and efforts of the townspeople, the church was repaired in 1946 and again in 1976, standing today as a testament to the community's resilience.

"IF THEY DON'T SEE JOY IN US, WHY WOULD THEY JOIN US?"

This was the question posed by Most Rev. Marvyn A. Maceda, D.D., Bishop of San Jose de Antique, during his homily on Day 2 of the DVP National Convention.

He reminded our Vocation Directors and Directresses that vocations are not born from marketing strategies or recruitment campaigns, but from "contagion." Young people are moved when they encounter priests, religious men and women, who are VISIBLY IN LOVE WITH JESUS CHRIST. 🥰

"If they do not sense that Christ is enough for us, why would they believe Christ will be enough for them?"

The youth are asking: "Is there somewhere I can offer my life that is worth EVERYTHING?" Bishop Maceda reminded us that the answer to that question must be seen in our own joyful witness.

What a profound challenge and beautiful reminder as we close the day!
