Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, which begins the sacred season of Lent in the Christian Church.
The word “shrove” comes from shrive, meaning to confess sins and receive forgiveness. On this day, Christians are invited to examine their lives, repent sincerely, and prepare their hearts for the 40 days of prayer, fasting, and sacrifice during Lent. It is a moment of spiritual cleansing before entering a deeper journey with God.
Shrove Tuesday is also closely connected to the burning of palms. The blessed palm branches from the previous year’s Palm Sunday are burned to create the ashes that will be used on Ash Wednesday. These ashes are placed on the foreheads of the faithful in the sign of the cross, reminding us:
“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
