— St. Rose of Lima was born in Lima, Peru. She was named after Isabel Flores de Oliva. At an early age, she had a deep love and faith in God. She spent most of her time praying and caring for the poor. She then became the first person born in the Americas to be canonized as a saint. As a result, St. Rose was renowned for her compassion and humility toward those in need.

Oh, Saint Rose of Lima, teach us to help those in need and to have a giving heart. May we follow your example of humility and devotion to God. Amen.

She was a Peruvian Dominican Tertiary. Her real name was Isabel, but due to her extraordinary beauty she was called the “Rose of Lima.” She did many mortifications. When someone says her hair was nice, she’d cut it. When her eyes get complemented, she’d rub dye on them. She said that her beauty was only for Christ. She sold laces and embroidery so she could help the poor. She was the first canonized saint from the Americas.

Isaias 22, 19-23

Pagbasa mula sa aklat ni propeta Isaias

Sinabi ng Panginoon kay Sabnang katiwala sa palasyo:
“Aalisin kita sa iyong katungkulan,
at palalayasin sa iyong kinalalagyan.
Tatawagin ko sa araw na iyon ang aking lingkod,
si Eliaquim na anak ni Helcias.
Siya ang pagsusuutin ko ng iyong buong kasuotan,
ibibigay ko sa kanya ang iyong kapangyarihan,
siya ang magiging pinakaama ng Jerusalem at ng Juda.
Ibibigay ko sa kanya ang susi ng bahay ni David;
ang kanyang buksa’y walang makapagsasara

The Blessed Virgin Mary is hailed by Catholics as the Queen of Heaven and Earth. This title is given to Mary based primarily on her role as Theotokos, or being the Mother of God. This is also the 5th Glorious Mystery which we meditate upon when we pray the Rosary. In 1954, Pope Pius XII, through the document “Ad Caeli Reginam,” established the memorial of the Queenship of Mary which is celebrated on the octave (eighth day) of the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary.

He was our pope for 11 years. His original name was Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto. He came from a poor family. He was a very conservative pope. He is known as the “Foe of Modernism” for condemning modernistic interpretation of theology. He encouraged the daily reception of the Holy Eucharist. He also lowered the age for the reception of the First Communion. This earned him the title “Pope of the Eucharist.”
