THE SIX APPARITIONS OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA

Today, August 19, we commemorate the 4th apparition of Our Lady of Fatima.

From May to October 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children—Lucia dos Santos, Francisco Marto, and Jacinta Marto—with a consistent message: pray the Rosary, do penance, pray for sinners, and seek peace and conversion.

Here are the six apparitions:

📍 FIRST APPARITION — MAY 13, 1917

Our Lady appeared to Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta while they were tending their sheep at the Cova da Iria in Fatima.

She asked them to pray the Rosary every day for peace in the world and the end of the war, and instructed them to return to the same place on the 13th of each month for the following five months.

📍 SECOND APPARITION — JUNE 13, 1917

Our Lady appeared again and urged the children to continue praying the Rosary. She also spoke particularly to Lucia, telling her that she would remain on earth longer in order to make Our Lady known and loved.

During this apparition, Mary expressed her desire that devotion to her Immaculate Heart be established throughout the world.

📍 THIRD APPARITION — JULY 13, 1917

This apparition is particularly significant because Our Lady entrusted the children with the Three Secrets of Fatima.

The first was a vision of hell and a call to pray and offer sacrifices for the conversion of sinners.

The second concerned the end of the First World War and the warning of another, more devastating war if humanity continued to offend God. Our Lady also spoke of the need for the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart and the devotion of the First Saturdays.

The third secret, which was kept confidential for many years, was eventually published by the Holy See in 2000. It contained a symbolic vision of persecution, suffering, and the martyrdom of the Pope and other members of the Church.

📍 FOURTH APPARITION — AUGUST 19, 1917

Because the children had been detained by civil authorities, they were unable to go to the Cova da Iria on August 13.

However, on August 19, Our Lady appeared to them at Valinhos.

She asked them to continue praying the Rosary and encouraged them to offer prayers and sacrifices for the conversion of sinners, reminding them of the seriousness of eternal salvation.

📍 FIFTH APPARITION — SEPTEMBER 13, 1917

By September, thousands of people had gathered at Fatima hoping to witness Our Lady.

She again asked the children to continue praying the Rosary for the end of the war and announced that she would perform a great sign in October so that everyone might believe.

📍 SIXTH APPARITION — OCTOBER 13, 1917

On October 13, an estimated 70,000 people gathered at Fatima despite the heavy rain.

Our Lady appeared to the children and identified herself as:

“I am the Lady of the Rosary.”

She asked that a chapel be built in her honor, urged everyone to continue praying the Rosary every day, and gave a final warning:

“Do not offend the Lord our God anymore, because He is already so much offended.”

Then came the extraordinary event that had been promised—the Miracle of the Sun.

Many witnesses reported seeing the sun appear to move, spin, or dance in the sky. Afterward, the three children also reported seeing different visions of St. Joseph with the Child Jesus, Our Lady of Sorrows, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

LITURGICAL ADVISORY. The annual Diocesan Feast of Nuestra Señora de Salvación, Patroness of the Diocese of Legazpi, traditionally observed on the Third Saturday of August, falls this year on Saturday, 15 August 2026, coinciding with the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

For the proper liturgical observance of these days, the Bishop of Legazpi, through the Diocesan Commission on Worship, announces that the following are to be observed:

- Friday evening, 14 August: The Vigil Mass of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated, using the proper prayers and readings provided for the Vigil Mass.

- Saturday, 15 August: The Diocese celebrates its annual Fiesta Salvación. While the Diocesan Feast coincides this year with the Solemnity of the Assumption, the latter takes liturgical precedence. Accordingly, all Masses and the Divine Office throughout the Diocese shall be those of the Solemnity of the Assumption, including the celebrations at the Diocesan Shrine of Nuestra Señora de Salvación at Joroan, Tiwi.

- Saturday evening, 15 August: The evening Masses remain Masses of the Solemnity of the Assumption and are not celebrated as anticipated Masses of the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The faithful who participate in Mass on Saturday evening fulfill their Sunday obligation.

- Sunday, 16 August: All Masses and the Divine Office shall be those of the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Our Diocese nevertheless joyfully observes its annual feast in honor of Nuestra Señora de Salvación, entrusting anew the clergy, religious, and lay faithful of the Diocese of Legazpi to the maternal protection of our Patroness and Heavenly Queen of Albay.

Storms often come without warning. They can shake our plans, challenge our strength, and make us wonder why God allows difficult moments in our lives. Yet, even in the midst of the storm, God remains with us.

Sometimes, it is through these storms that our faith is strengthened. They teach us to trust God more deeply, to surrender what we cannot control, and to remain faithful even when we cannot see what lies ahead.

May we learn to see every storm not only as a trial, but also as an opportunity to grow closer to God. For even when life feels uncertain, we can trust that He is shaping our faith and leading us through.

Last Tuesday, August 4, our community gathered to celebrate Clergy Day, a day dedicated to our Fatima Priests, Fr. Papoy and Fr. Eaw. The evening featured messages, performances, and shared smiles as we thank God for the gift of priesthood given to our beloved shepherds.

As we celebrate the gift of your priesthood, we thank God for your generous and faithful service. Like Mary, you continue to lead us to Jesus through the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, the proclamation of God's Word, and your compassionate care for His people.

In this Jubilee Year of our Diocese, we are reminded that we are Biniyayaan, Inaantabayan, at Sinusugo. Your lives as priests are a living witness of these blessings: blessed by God's call, guided by His grace, and sent forth each day to shepherd His flock with courage and love.

Thank you for walking with us in faith, celebrating our joys, carrying our burdens, and reminding us that Christ is always at the heart of our parish community.
