Saint Rita of Cascia devoted her life to embodying the transformative power of patience, deep trust in God, and an unshakeable commitment to peace. Born Margherita Lotti in 1381 in Roccaporena, Italy, she dreamed of becoming a nun but, out of obedience to her parents, married Paolo Mancini at age twelve. For eighteen years, Rita endured a difficult and abusive marriage to Paolo, a quick-tempered man with many enemies. Through her humility, kindness, and prayer, she eventually guided him to a profound conversion before he was tragically ambushed and killed by warring political factions while returning home from work.
Confronted with immense grief, Saint Rita chose the path of radical Christian charity by publicly forgiving her husbandโs killers. However, a new cross emerged when her brother-in-law convinced her twin sons to seek a violent vendetta for their father's death. Unable to change her sons' minds, Rita heroically prayed that God would remove them from the world rather than let them commit the mortal sin of murder; a year later, both boys succumbed to an outbreak of dysentery. Now completely alone, Rita sought entry into the Augustinian Monastery of St. Mary Magdalene in Cascia. She was initially denied but was finally admitted at age thirty-six after successfully working to reconcile the feuding, violent families of Cascia and restore civil peace.
For the next forty years, Rita lived a life of austerity, prayer, and dedicated service to those in need. At age sixty, while meditating before an image of Christ crucified, she received a partial stigmataโa permanent, painful wound on her forehead known as the "Gift of the Thorn." As she lay dying in the freezing winter, she miraculously received a single, brightly colored rose from her childhood garden. Known as the "Patroness of Impossible Causes," Saint Ritaโs life teaches us that no situation is beyond the reach of God's grace. May her example inspire us to respond to life's thorns with radical forgiveness, unwavering hope, and true fraternal charity.

Dear St. Rita,
During your entire life on earth, you have found your happiness by following the will of our heavenly Father. Help me to be as trusting of God in all His plans for me. Help me this day to give myself to Him as you did, without limit, without fear, without counting the cost. Help me to be generous in serving the needs of others, patient in all difficulties, forgiving toward all who injure me. Help me to learn more deeply the great mystery of the Cross of Jesus, so that by embracing it as you did, I may come to experience its power to heal and to save. Amen.
