He had fame, he had money, he had pleasuresโ€”yet he gave it all up for Christ.

Born into a rich and lavish life, Francis of Assisi was far from what we knew him today. It was only when certain events in life changed his perspective, the most notable would be after a strange vision made him return to Assisi after enlisting in the army of Walter III. Soon, he received a mystical vision of Jesus that led him to repair his church referring to the country chapel of San Damiano.

By 1209, Francis of Assisi had inspired 11 men to be like him and live a life of poverty. He later died in 1226 singing Psalm 141 and was declared a saint by Pope Gregory IX.

October 7, 1571, the Holy League engaged in a naval confrontation against the Ottoman Empire, known as the Battle of Lepanto. They were outnumbered roughly 4:3. Saint Pius V asked all of Europe to pray the Holy Rosary for a victory, and according to legend, the Pope announced their victory long before word reached Rome through a vision. In this month of the Holy Rosary, may we never give up and always remember to pray the Rosaryโ€”one of our strongest weapons against adversity.

Born in the 4th Century at Stridon, St. Jerome rose to become a prominent priest, theologian, and historian. He is most famous for translating the Bible from its original language into Latinโ€”giving birth to the Vulgate. Through his works and miracles, he became the patron saint for librarians, translators, and archivists.

Across Sacred Scripture, 3 Archangels are named, and their feasts are celebrated today, September 29. St. Michael-the chief heavenly warrior of God who commands the Heavenly Hosts against the forces of Satan. St. Gabriel-God's messenger who announced to the Virgin the birth of Christ. St. Raphael-he who heals with God's power, who plays a central role in the Book of Tobit as a human to guide and protect Tobias.

In a world where the love for God is slowly getting replaced by the love for material things, San Lorenzo Ruiz remains a beacon where we can all draw light from. Despite knowing the harships he'll face, he still chose to preach and be a missionary to the least, lost, and last. As Altar Servers, may we set him as our example of being a selfless servant.

"Prayer is the best weapon we possess, the key that opens the heart of God."

Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, better known as Padre Pio, was a Capuchin friar and priest born on May 25, 1887. He was known for bearing the stigmataโ€”the wounds of Christโ€”and hearing numerous confessions a day. He is the patron saint of healing because, throughout his life and after his death, thousands of physical healings have been attributed to him. Padre Pio also constantly urged us to live a life of prayer, since it brings us closer to Him.

"Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, I desire mercy, not sacrifice. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners." -Matthew 9:12-13

St. Matthew before becoming Jesus' Apostle was a tax collectorโ€”a role known for its systemic corruption. Despite having been in that position, Jesus told him "follow me," to which Matthew got up and followed Him. St. Matthew's story reminds us that it is never too late to change. No matter our past, so long as we desire to change wholeheartedly, our future is with God. As Oscar Wilde's saying goes, "Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future."
