Longing is used by the RSV for a wide range of human desires and cravings. Frequently, longing denotes human emotions that are not judged to be morally good or bad. In contrast, the godly people longs for knowledge of God"s Will (Psa.119:20,40,131), for God"s salvation (Psa.119:174), and for communion with God (Psa.42:1).

David was driven to intense agony by his enemies, for they gave him vinegar for his thirst, an accepted drink but one which increase his thirst (Psa.69:22). Jesus thirst on the cross and they offer of vinegar parallels to David's experience (Jn.19:28; Matt.27:48). The vinegar which have been was a dilute vinegar drink used by Roman soldiers. It was called "posca" and was a cheap acidulated thirst quencher.
