In a world that is constantly exposed to trends and comparison, our hearts are under relentless influence. Proverbs 4:23 reminds us to always be cautious on what happens around us that can always impact how we shape ourselves.
Let us be mindful about what we allow to mold ourselves, let us guard our hearts by being careful with the voices that we listen to, the content that we consume, and the values that we adapt. Public validation, success, and social status can be used to measure our self-worth if we are not being guarded. When these things being mentioned dominate our hearts, it can start to control our choices, attitudes, and later on our identity.
This verse reminds us that our hearts are not just filled by what we feel โ our decisions, thoughts, and desires can be affected by the influence. The things that fills our hearts can impact our words, actions, and relationships around us. When our hearts are filled with bitterness, we turn out to be full of envy but when we let God influence us, we can be filled by love, faith, and wisdom.
Proverbs 4:23 reminds us to not be easily influenced by external factors. It calls our hearts to be aligned with God for if we follow his direction, we naturally follow a better path regardless of how complicated and confusing things go.
