What Solomon’s Request Teaches Us About What We Should Really Ask God For

“And these were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shimea, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, four, of Bathshua the daughter of Ammiel.”
— 1 Chronicles 3:5, KJV

Imagine growing up in the household of a king.
You have a royal father, a royal mother, wealth, servants, influence, and every opportunity imaginable. You grow up alongside your brothers, sharing the same family, the same home, and the same history.
This was the beginning of Solomon's story.

The Bible tells us that David and Bathsheba had four sons mentioned by name: Shimea, Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon.

Yet among these four brothers, Solomon would experience a moment that would change his life forever.

God would give him an extraordinary invitation:
“Ask what I shall give thee.”
— 1 Kings 3:5, KJV

Think about that.
If God gave you the same opportunity today, what would you ask for?
More money?
A better job?
A bigger house?
Good health?
Success?
A longer life?
Revenge against someone who hurt you?

Solomon had the opportunity to ask for something that could benefit himself.
But he asked for something much greater.

He asked for wisdom.

What can we learn from this?

Solomon’s story reminds us that the greatest blessing is not always what we can possess, but what we can become through what we ask God for. Among his brothers, Solomon was given an extraordinary opportunity to ask for anything, yet he chose wisdom. Not wealth, power, or a longer life. His request revealed a heart that understood that true success begins with knowing how to live according to God’s will.

The lesson is simple: when we pray, let us not only ask God to change our circumstances; ask Him to change and guide us. We may ask for blessings, but let us also ask for wisdom to use them well. We may ask for success, but let us ask for a heart that honors God when success comes. Like Solomon, may we learn to desire not merely what God can give us, but what God can make us into.

ᴀꜱ ᴀ ᴊᴇᴡᴇʟ ᴏꜰ ɢᴏʟᴅ ɪɴ ᴀ ꜱᴡɪɴᴇ'ꜱ ꜱɴᴏᴜᴛ, ꜱᴏ ɪꜱ ᴀ ꜰᴀɪʀ ᴡᴏᴍᴀɴ ᴡʜɪᴄʜ ɪꜱ ᴡɪᴛʜᴏᴜᴛ ᴅɪꜱᴄʀᴇᴛɪᴏɴ.

There are things that appear beautiful on the outside but become deeply disappointing when their true nature is revealed. Proverbs 11:22 gives us a striking picture of this truth: “As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.”

The picture is intentionally unpleasant. A beautiful jewel is valuable and attractive, but placed in the snout of a swine, its beauty is completely out of place. The jewel has not lost its value, but its placement reveals how beauty alone cannot compensate for the absence of good judgment. Solomon is teaching us that outward attractiveness, position, possessions, or reputation cannot replace the character of a person.

The word “discretion” carries the idea of good sense, judgment, and the ability to conduct oneself wisely. A person may possess admirable qualities outwardly and still make foolish choices inwardly. What God desires is not merely something that looks good, but a life governed by wisdom.

This principle reaches far beyond physical appearance. We live in a world that often teaches us to value what can be immediately see appearance, success, talent, popularity, and possessions. But God looks deeper. Character determines how those outward blessings are used. Without wisdom, even something beautiful can become a source of shame rather than honor.

There is also a personal challenge here. We should not spend more effort improving what people see than developing what God sees. It is possible to polish the outside while neglecting the heart. Yet true beauty is strengthened by discretion, humility, purity, and wisdom.

The jewel is not the problem. The problem is where the jewel is placed. In the same way, the gifts and qualities God has given us are valuable, but they must be governed by godly wisdom. Beauty without discretion is misplaced beauty; ability without character is misplaced ability.

What God is building in us inwardly is far more valuable than what others can admire outwardly. A life shaped by wisdom gives beauty its proper place.
