Galatians 5:1, 13-15 ESV | Ptr. Nhandz
If we are truly experiencing the ultimate freedom, then does it mean we can do anything and that โAll is permissible?โ.
God completes that truth by saying, โnot all is beneficial.โ That changes everything. Freedom is not about doing whatever we want, itโs about choosing what is right, what builds us up, and what leads us closer to God. Because the truth is, not everything that is allowed will actually help us. Some things may feel good for a moment, but quietly pull us back into chains.
Before Christ, we were not as free as we thought. We were bound by sin, by guilt, fear, and habits we couldnโt easily escape. But Jesus came to change that. Our freedom came at a cost, the cross. He gave His life so we could be released from what once held us captive. And this freedom grows as we continue to follow His Word and live in His truth. Itโs not just a one-time experience, itโs a daily walk with Him.
Because of Jesus, we are freed from the penalty of sin, from its power over our lives, and one day, even from its presence. But we are not just set free from something, we are set free for something. God calls us into a life of purpose, joy, and love. A life where we no longer live for ourselves, but learn to serve Him and others. And in that kind of life, we discover that serving God is not a burden, it is actually where real freedom begins.
Still, we must be careful. Freedom is not an excuse to go back to old ways. Not everything permissible is beneficial. Thatโs why we need to walk by the Spirit. When we follow the Spirit, we are guided away from the desires of the flesh and led into a life that honors God. And the clearest sign of this kind of freedom is love, choosing to care, forgive, and serve others.
So today, the call is simple but serious: stand firm in the freedom Jesus has given you. Donโt return to the life that once held you down. You may have the freedom to choose anything, but choose what is beneficial. Choose what leads to life. Because true freedom is not found in having no limits, it is found in being set free by Christ, and living that freedom every day.
