Press On, O Thou Pilgrims Of This Earth!
DEAR TIRED RUNNER
When your journey towards following God gets tough, it is always wise to remember why you started.
Why are you in this race?
Was it because of the rewards it will bring, the excitement it gives, or the applause you’ll receive?
What brought you here is what will keep you here.
If you are here for what you will get, you will quit once your expectations fail, but if you are here for what you can give, the more you lose, the more you’ll want to stay. Because in God’s economy, real success is not measured by gain but by loss.
The path of obedience — of following the footsteps of Jesus — is the path to the cross:
It means bearing your burdens with Him.
It means being mocked by the crowd because of walking with Him.
It means being betrayed and abandoned because of being faithful to Him.
It means taking scourges and slaps and offering the other cheek just like Him.
It means dying to yourself daily and living for Him.
Because he who is unwilling to bear his cross is unworthy to wear his crown.
You cannot expect to walk in company with Jesus and live an opposite life. To walk with Him means to suffer for Him. He never promised to carry all our crosses for us, but to carry them with us.
“The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.”
-Matthew 10:24
How can we celebrate His victories if we are not with Him during His agonies? Following Jesus is not for those who want what’s easy but for those who strive for what is worth it.
As you walk along with Him, you will find yourself stumbling here and there. You cannot be strong all the time. When this happens, remember that your journey isn’t over. You are allowed to rest. For victors are not those who never rest but those who never quit. Winners rest too. And when you rest, choose to rest in the arms of Jesus. Never hide nor run from Him; He is your Shepherd who not just walks with you but also someone who’s willing to carry you through. Our strength is not found in how long we’ve run on our own, but on how low we knelt in dependence upon Him.
It does not matter if others get ahead of you. The race we are called in is not about who is first but who lasts. Victory is not always found in running but in resting — rest in Jesus.
“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
- Philippians 1:6
So run,
rest,
but always resume.
Stay in the course no matter how tiring it is. Above all, we are not just called to win but also to finish.
Choose to finish well!
“ I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” - 2 Timothy 4:7
“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” - Hebrews 12:1-2
