34th Founding Anniversary of the Apostolic Vicariate of Bontoc–Lagawe

With grateful hearts, we thank God for the successful celebration of the 34th Founding Anniversary of the Apostolic Vicariate of Bontoc–Lagawe.

The celebration began with a Solemn Eucharistic Celebration, presided over by Most Rev. Valentin C. Dimoc, D.D., Apostolic Vicar of Bontoc–Lagawe, where clergy, religious, and lay faithful gathered as one Church to offer thanksgiving for God's abundant blessings throughout the years.

Following the Holy Mass, everyone shared a simple fellowship breakfast, bringing together our priests and all who attended the celebration in a spirit of communion, gratitude, and joy.
May the Lord continue to bless our Vicariate as we faithfully live out our mission:
"Our Name is BEC, Our Work is YEAST."

34 Years of Faith and Mission

History of the Apostolic Vicariate of Bontoc–Lagawe

The history of the Apostolic Vicariate of Bontoc–Lagawe is a testament to God's enduring faithfulness and the unwavering missionary spirit that brought the Gospel to the peoples of Mountain Province and Ifugao.
The first seeds of the Catholic faith in the region were planted by the Augustinian missionaries. On November 28, 1893, Fr. José Iglesia, OSA, celebrated the first recorded baptism in Bontoc, marking the beginning of Catholic evangelization in the area. Although the mission was interrupted by the Philippine Revolution in 1898, the foundation of faith had already been laid.

A new chapter began on December 24, 1907, when the Belgian missionaries of the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CICM) arrived in Bontoc under the leadership of Fr. Constance Jurgens, CICM, and Fr. Jules Sepulchre, CICM. Through their tireless missionary work, they established mission stations, schools, churches, and Christian communities, nurturing the faith and serving the indigenous peoples of the Cordillera.
As the Church continued to flourish, Pope Pius XII established the Apostolic Vicariate of Mountain Province (Montañosa) on June 10, 1948, providing a stronger pastoral structure for the growing Catholic communities throughout the Cordillera.

Recognizing the continued growth of the Church and the need for more effective pastoral care, Pope Saint John Paul II, through the Apostolic Constitution Ad aptius in Insulis Philippinis, divided the Apostolic Vicariate of Montañosa on July 6, 1992, creating the Apostolic Vicariate of Bontoc–Lagawe, together with the Apostolic Vicariate of Tabuk and the Apostolic Vicariate of Baguio (now Diocese of Baguio). The new Vicariate was officially inaugurated on August 6, 1992, and entrusted with the pastoral care of the provinces of Mountain Province and Ifugao.

Today, the Apostolic Vicariate of Bontoc–Lagawe is composed of 23 parishes and approximately 354 Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs). It continues to carry out its mission of evangelization through the dedicated service of its clergy, religious, catechists, and lay faithful. The Santa Rita de Cascia Cathedral in Bontoc serves as the Cathedral Church of the Vicariate, while the Bishop Francisco F. Claver, SJ Pastoral Complex serves as its pastoral center for formation, ministry, and pastoral services.

For 34 years, the Apostolic Vicariate has journeyed as a vibrant local Church, rooted in the faith handed down by the Augustinian and CICM missionaries. Guided by its enduring pastoral vision and inspired by its official motto, "Our Name is BEC, Our Work is YEAST."

The Vicariate continues to strengthen Basic Ecclesial Communities as the heart of evangelization, fostering communion, participation, and mission among the people of God.

As we celebrate this 34th Founding Anniversary, we give thanks to Almighty God for His abundant blessings and renew our commitment to continue Christ's mission with faith, hope, and love, joyfully proclaiming the Gospel to future generations.

With grateful hearts, we warmly invite everyone to join us in celebrating the 34th Founding Anniversary of the Apostolic Vicariate of Bontoc–Lagawe on August 6, 2026 at 6AM.

The Apostolic Vicariate of Bontoc–Lagawe was established on August 6, 1992, following the division of the former Apostolic Vicariate of Montañosa into the Apostolic Vicariates of Bontoc–Lagawe, Apostolic Vicariate of Tabuk, and Diocese of Baguio. For 34 years, our Vicariate has faithfully served the people of Mountain Province and Ifugao, proclaiming the Gospel and building vibrant Christian communities.

Today, the Apostolic Vicariate is composed of 23 parishes and approximately 354 Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs), continuing its mission of evangelization through the dedicated service of its clergy, religious, and lay faithful.

Let us come together in thanksgiving for God's abundant blessings over the past 34 years and pray for the continued growth of our local Church. May this celebration renew our commitment to walk together in faith, hope, and mission.

Today, August 2, our Vicariate joyfully celebrates Priests' Day, even though its official observance is traditionally on August 4, the Memorial of Saint John Mary Vianney, Patron Saint of Parish Priests. By celebrating today, we are given the opportunity as a community to gather in gratitude and prayer for our priests.

With thankful hearts, we honor their faithful service, unwavering dedication, and selfless commitment to proclaiming the Gospel and shepherding God's people. Through the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, the Sacraments, and their daily pastoral ministry, they continue to lead us closer to Christ.
To all our beloved priests, especially those serving in our Vicariate and parish, thank you for your generous "yes" to God's call. Your love for God and His people is a true blessing to our communities.

Feast Day Preparation and Restoration

Every successful celebration begins and ends with willing hearts. From the early preparations to the final restoration, our parish community came together in the true spirit of faith, service, and unity.

Countless volunteers devoted their time and talents to decorating the church and stage, organizing the liturgy and procession, preparing the venue, preparing the foods and ensuring that every detail reflected the beauty of our celebration. After the festivities, the same spirit of cooperation continued as everyone joined in restoring and cleaning our parish grounds.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs), mandated organizations, parish ministries, volunteers, and parishioners whose generosity, dedication, and teamwork made our Feast and Thanksgiving Celebration a meaningful and memorable success.

Celebrating Faith, Fellowship, and Thanksgiving

The Feast and Thanksgiving Celebration continued with a vibrant Fellowship Program, where our parish community came together in an atmosphere of joy, gratitude, and unity. Through songs, cultural dances, and heartfelt performances, our Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs), mandated organizations, and parish ministries shared their gifts and talents in honor of St. Mary Magdalene.

More than an entertainment program, this gathering reflected the strong bond that unites us as one parish family. It was a celebration of God's faithfulness, the spirit of service, and the vibrant life of our community.
We extend our sincere appreciation to everyone whose dedication and generosity contributed to the success of this memorable celebration.

May the witness of St. Mary Magdalene continue to inspire us to proclaim Christ through lives of faith, love, and service.
