1 Chronicles 13:1-12, 2 Samuel 6:1-8

The Ark of the Covenant represented God’s presence among His people and God had given specific instructions on how it is to be transported (Numbers 4:15; Exodus 25:14; Numbers 7:9). Uzzah reached out to steady the ark when it appeared to be falling. His intention may have been good, but his actions revealed a deeper problem: God’s instructions had not been followed, and God’s holiness had not been taken seriously.

I. Good Intentions Do Not Replace God’s Instructions

The Israelites had good intentions in bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, but they did not follow God’s pattern for transporting it. Instead, they imitated the world’s pattern by placing the ark on a cart. Uzzah then assumed that the ark would fall if he did not intervene, so he reached out and touched it. Although he may have thought he was helping, God had already given clear instructions concerning the ark. This shows us that good intentions cannot replace obedience to God’s instructions.

We see a similar principle in Numbers 20:7–12, when Moses acted differently from what God had commanded. His punishment was he could no longer enter the promised land. Another example is King Saul’s disobedience in 1 Samuel 15.bSamuel told Saul, “To obey is better than sacrifice” (1 Samuel 15:22). Saul’s intentions and reasoning could not make his disobedience acceptable. God wanted complete obedience, not obedience according to Saul’s own judgment. Man often continues to change what he has no right to change, especially when he believes his way is better or more reasonable. Revelation 22:18–19 reminds us of the seriousness of adding to or taking away from God’s Word. Therefore, we must ask ourselves: Do we serve God according to His instructions, or according to what we think is right? God has given us His Word as the pattern for how we are to worship and serve Him.

II. God’s Holiness Is Not Casual

Uzzah’s death also reminds us that God’s holiness is not something we should treat casually. Sometimes we become so familiar with God that we forget that He is holy. Familiarity can cause us to lose our reverence and treat the things of God as ordinary. Even the things we do for the Lord can become routine, and when that happens, our approach to God can become too casual.

In 2 Samuel 6:9–15, David recognized the seriousness of God’s holiness and responded with fear and reverence. The presence of God was not something to be treated carelessly. Likewise, we must remember that although we can approach God with confidence, we must never approach Him without reverence. Ecclesiastes 12:13 gives us the proper response: “Fear God, and keep his commandments.”

Ephesians 2:10

▪︎ Historical Background
- The Epistle to the Ephesians was written by the Apostle Paul around A.D. 60-62 during his first imprisonment in Rome (Ephesians 3:1; 4:1; 6:20). It was addressed to the saints in Ephesus. one of the most influential cities in Asia Minor, famous for the Temple of Artemis (Diana) - one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (Acts 19:23-41).
- The city was filled with idolatry, immorality magic, and pagan philosophy. Many Christians in Ephesus had once practiced these sinful lifestyles (Acts 19:18-20). Paul wrote to remind them that through Christ they had become a new people, redeemed by God's grace, united in one body, and called to live holy lives worthy of their calling.
- Ephesians emphasizes God's eternal plan of redemption, the unity of the church, and the believer's new life in Christ,

▪︎ Immediate Context
(Ephesians 2:1-10)
1. Our Former Condition - Dead in Sin (2:1-3)
Before Christ, every person was spiritually dead because of sin
• Dead in trespasses and sins.
• Walking according to the world
• Following the prince of the power of the air (Satan)
• Children of wrath.

2. God's Gracious Salvation (2:4-9)
Although mankind deserved condemnation. God acted because of His great love and mercy
• God made us alive with Christ.
• Salvation is by grace.
• Received through obedient faith.
• Not earned by human merit.

- John 3:16

3. God's Purpose After Salvation (2:10)
Paul now explains why God saved us. Salvation does not end with forgiveness It begins a new life devoted to serving God through good works.

WHAT ARE THE TRUTHS THAT ARE REVEALED IN GOD'S WORD
I. WE ARE CREATED BY GOD
A. We are God's masterpiece.
- The word workmanship comes from the Greek Toinua (poiěma) meaning something carefully made, a masterpiece, or a work of art. Christians are not spiritual accidents They are God's new creation.

B. We are recreated through Christ.
- God not only forgives sinners. He transforms sinners into new people. Conversion changes both our standing and our character.

C. We belong to God
- Because God created us spiritually our lives belong entirely to Him.
• 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
• Romans 14:7-8

Never define yourself by your failures. God has recreated you for His glory.

II. WE ARE CREATED FOR GOD'S WORK
A. Good works are the result of salvation
- Good works never earn salvation. Instead, salvation produces good works
• James 2:17-18

▪︎ Application:
Our good works are not for our own glory, but for God's glory.
B. Good works demonstrate genuine faith
- True faith becomes visible through obedience Examples include:
> Serving the church
> Helping those in need

C. Good works glorify God.
- Our service should point people to Christ not ourselves.

III. WE ARE CREATED TO WALK IN GOD'S WORK
A. God prepared our work beforehand
- Before we ever served Him, God had already planned opportunities for faithful service. Every Christian has a place in His kingdom.

B. God expects a daily walk of obedience
- Paul says we should walk in good works Christianity is not an occasional activity. It is a daily lifestyle.

C. God rewards faithful service.
- Our labor in the Lord is never wasted. God remembers faithful obedience.
• 1 Corinthians 15:58

Every morning ask, "Lord, what good work have You prepared for me today?"

CONCLUSION
- Paul reminds us that before Christ we walked in sin (Ephesians 2:1-3), but after salvation we are called to walk in good works (Ephesians 2:10). The Christian life is more than escaping hell-it is embracing God's purpose.
- God did not save us to remain spectators He saved us to become servants. We are His workmanship, created in Christ, for good works, and called to walk in them
- The question is not merely "Have I been saved?" but "Am I fulfilling the purpose for which God saved me?"

LESSONS AND APPLICATIONS
1. God recreated us to reflect His character through faithful service. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
2. Saving faith always produces obedient works (James 2:17-18)
3. Every Christian has a place and purpose in the body of Christ. (1 Corinthians 12:18)

Ephesians 2:8-10, 3:1, 6:20

According to Ephesians 2:8–10, salvation is entirely God’s gift through grace. No one can earn salvation because it is God’s undeserved favor. It is only by grace that we can be saved. Good works do not save us; rather, good works are the result of salvation. Those who are truly saved will demonstrate their new life through good works because we are transformed by God. We are transformed, not transformers. Therefore, we should trust completely in God’s grace and live with grace, faith, and obedience. We are called to live Christ and good works, and to live and continue to perform good works as evidence of the new life God has given us. As Paul reminds us in Ephesians 3:1 and Ephesians 6:20, we are called to faithfully live and proclaim the Gospel even when challenges come.

But what are the good works that God wants us to do? We are called to walk in love as Christ loved us (Ephesians 5:2). We should practice love by showing Christ’s love to others through our words and actions. We should also live a holy & righteous life, putting away our old ways and allowing God to renew our minds (Ephesians 4:22–23). This means showing kindness, compassion, and forgiveness to others (Ephesians 4:32). We are also called to serve others humbly and use our gifts to build others up and help those around us (Ephesians 4:28). We must live by the Spirit so that He can produce fruit in our lives, such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). Finally, we should share the Gospel, proclaim the good news, and boldly make Christ known (Ephesians 6:19–20). We should also pray for wisdom, courage, and opportunities to share the Gospel.

Do these works prove our obedience? Good works are evidence of genuine faith. Performing good works does not earn our salvation, but our good works show the evidence of a changed and obedient life. Since we have been saved and transformed by God's grace, our lives should reflect Christ. We should always do good works for God's Glory and not for our own recognition (1 Corinthians 10:31). At the same time, we must obey God's Word above human traditions or opinions. Isaiah 55:8–9 reminds us that God's thoughts and ways are higher than ours, while Galatians 1:6–9 reminds us to remain faithful to the true Gospel and not be led away by other teachings.

Therefore, our application is to be strong in the Lord. You have been saved, transformed, and given a new life in Christ. Let us stand firm, trust completely in God's grace, and continue to live in obedience through good works. Let us practice love, live a holy and righteous life, serve others humbly, live by the Spirit, and share the Gospel. Everything we do should point people to Christ and bring glory to God. As we faithfully live out the salvation God has given us, may we one day hear the words of Matthew 25:23: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Matthew 21:18-22, Mark 11:12-14,20-25

In Matthew 21:18–22 and Mark 11:12–14, 20–25, the story of the fig tree teaches us about genuine faith, devotion, and the importance of bearing fruit. The fig tree looked like it should have fruit, but it was fruitless. In the same way, a person can appear devoted to God outwardly but still have a heart that is far from Him. Jeremiah 12:2 reminds us that people may grow, but not in God. This causes us to ask, “What is our status with God?” As Matthew 15:8 teaches, we can honor God with our lips while our hearts are far from Him.

The fig tree also represents the judgment on Israel. Outwardly they abide but their hearts are far. The people could praise God with their words, as seen in Mark 11:9, but their lives did not always show genuine devotion. Matthew 23:27–28 compares hypocrites to beautiful tombs that are clean on the outside but unclean within. This reminds us that God looks beyond our outward appearance and examines our hearts. 1 John 1:6–7 calls us to walk in the light, while 1 Peter 4:17 reminds us that judgment begins with the household of God. The ax is on the tree, showing the seriousness of being fruitless.

The main theological lessons are to bear fruit, recognize divine authority, and war against hypocrisy. Luke 13:6–9 and Matthew 3:10 teach that God expects His people to bear fruit. Our faith should produce visible changes in our lives. We must also submit to divine authority, knowing that God has the right to examine and judge our lives. Finally, we must war against hypocrisy through an ongoing check of our hearts. We should continually ask whether our faith is genuine, whether we are growing in God, and whether our lives are producing good fruit.

In short, the story of the fig tree reminds us that God does not want an outward appearance of devotion without genuine fruit. Let us examine our hearts, grow in God, walk in the light, and bear fruit that shows our faith is real.
