AUGUST 27|| ST. MONICA, MARRIED WOMAN

-Monica, +387 at Ostia; born in Tagaste in Roman Africa; after 30 years of prayer, she obtained the conversion of her dissolute pagan husband; under the guidance of Ambrose, she won the conversion of her eldest, Augustine; patroness of mother.

AUGUST 25|| ST. LOUIS, KING, AND ST. JOSEPH CALASANZ, PRIEST

-Louis IX of France, +1270; mpdel ruler and father of 11 children; Franciscan tertiary who cared especially for lepers; built Saint Chapelle in Paris as a reliquary for the crown of thorns while on his second crusade. Died of the plague near Tunis; patron of masons and sculptors.

-Joseph Calasanz, +1648; from Aragon; founded Piarists, dedicated to helping poor children; faced many trials and calumnies for his work, including the temporary suppression of his institute; patron of all Christian schools dedicated to assisting the poor.

-Bartholomew, + 1st Century; identified ith Nathaniel, "in whom there is no guile; said to have preached the Gospel in India and Armenia where according to tradition he was flayed alive.

-Bernard, +1153; Cistercian abbot of Clairvaux; reformer and spiritual author (e.g., On Loving God, 86 sermons on the Canticle of Canticles); preached against the Albigensians; founded 68 monasteries; preached the 2nd crusade; denounced injustice and worked for peace; known as Dpctor Mellifus; patron of Gilbraltar.

AUGUST 19|| ST. EZECHEL MORENO, BISHOP

-Ezechel Moreno was born in Alfaro (La Rioja, Spain) on April 9, 1848; he professed his vows in the order of Augustinian Recollects in Monteaugudo (Naquirra) in 1865, was ordained priest in Manila in 1872, and worked for 15 years as a missionary in the Philippines. Innumerable cures, especially for cancer, are attributed to his intercession. Beatified on November 1, 1975, he was canonized on October 11, 1992, in Santo Domingo on the occasion of the fifth centenary of the Christianization of America.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the four (4) Marian Dogma of the Catholic Church. The Blessed Virgin Mary was taken both body and soul into heaven at the end of her life here on earth. To honor Mary, Christians celebrate the Solemn Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15 each year.

AUGUST 14|| ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE, PRIEST AND MARTYR

-Born in Poland in 1894, St. Maximilian Kolbe was a Franciscan priest and publisher who famously volunteered to die in place of a stranger at the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1941. He founded Niepokalanów, a massive monastery and media center in Poland that printed millions of evangelizing magazines.

AUGUST 13|| STS. PONTIAN, POPE AND HIPPOLYTUS, PRIEST

-Pontian, + 235; Bishop of Rome banished by Maximus Thrax to Sardinia where he reconciled Hippolytus; before dying, he abdicated his office (first pope to do so) to make way for a successor; buried in the cemetery of Callistus.

-Hippolytus, +235; Apostolic tradition is attributed to him Roman priest and stern rigorist; opposed Sabellianism and milder penitential disciple of Pope St. Callistus (+222); first anti-pope (+217-235); exiled to Sardinia with Pontian; source of Eucharistic Prayer II.

AUGUST 12|| ST. FRANCES DE CHANTAL, RELIGIOUS

-Jane Fremiot, + 13 December 1641; from Dijon; married to Barron de Chantal and mother of six children; as a widow, with Francis de Sales, her spiritual director, she founded in 1610 at Annecy in Savoy the visitations nuns; established some 85 monasteries before her death.
