Bishop Noel Pedregosa of Malaybalay Meets Pope Leo XIV at St. Peter’s Square During Mindanao Bishops’ Pilgrimage for the Jubilee of Hope

Rome, Italy β€” September 17, 2025

Today, Most Rev. Noel Portal Pedregosa, D.D., Bishop of Malaybalay, had the grace of meeting Pope Leo XIV during the General Audience at St. Peter’s Square in Rome. The encounter took place as part of the Mindanao Bishops’ Pilgrimage for the Jubilee of Hope, held from September 13–17, 2025.

The pilgrimage brought together bishops from across Mindanao, who journeyed in communion with the universal Church to celebrate the Jubilee Year of Hope. This spiritual undertaking was not only an opportunity to renew their pastoral commitment but also a sign of unity with the Holy Father and the global Catholic community.

During the General Audience, Pope Leo XIV greeted pilgrims and groups from around the world, offering words of encouragement and blessing. Bishop Pedregosa, together with his brother bishops, expressed their filial devotion to the Pope and their solidarity with his mission of shepherding the Church in today’s times.

The Jubilee of Hope emphasizes renewal, reconciliation, and the strengthening of faith in Christ amidst the challenges of the modern world. For the Mindanao bishops, this pilgrimage also serves as a profound moment of prayer for peace, harmony, and the continued flourishing of the Church in the Philippines.

About the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary:

The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated on August 15th, honors the belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken up into Heaven, body and soul, at the end of her life. This belief is held by the Roman Catholic Church, Eastern and Oriental Orthodoxy, and some parts of Anglicanism. In Eastern Orthodox tradition, it's called the Dormition of the Theotokos, meaning the "falling asleep" of Mary.

The Catholic Church teaches this as dogma, officially declared by Pope Pius XII in 1950, but the belief dates back to early Christian times, with evidence from the 4th century and liturgical celebrations beginning in the 5th century. This belief reflects the sense of the faithful, as the pope confirmed that it was widely accepted by Catholics before it was formally defined.

Though the Assumption isn't directly mentioned in the Bible, the Catholic Church sees it as consistent with Scripture and tradition. References like the Annunciation, where Mary is called "full of Grace," and other biblical passages, such as Genesis 3:15 and Revelation 12:1–2, support the doctrine.

The Church hasn't defined whether Mary actually died or was taken to Heaven alive. The important point is that her body did not decay, reflecting her unique role as the mother of Jesus.
