Jos 10:12 At that time Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon."
Jos 10:13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day.
Jos 10:14 There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD heeded the voice of a man, for the LORD fought for Israel.

Notes from Matthew Henry:

Here, I. Joshua resolves to assist the Gibeonites, and God encourages him in this resolve. 1. He ascended from Gilgal (Jos_10:7), that is, he designed, determined, and prepared for, this expedition to relieve Gibeon, for it is probable it was before he stirred a step that God spoke to him to encourage him. It was generous and just in Joshua to help his new allies, though perhaps the king of Jerusalem, when he attacked them, little thought that Joshua would be so ready to help them, but expected he would abandon them as Canaanites, the rather because they had obtained their league with him by fraud; therefore he speaks with assurance (Jos_10:4) of smiting Gibeon. But Joshua knew that his promise to let them live obliged him, not only not to slay them himself, but not to stand by and see them slain when it was in the power of his hand to prevent it, Pro_24:11, Pro_24:12. He knew that when they embraced the faith and worship of the God of Israel they came to trust under the shadow of his wings (Rth_2:12), and therefore, as his servants, he was bound to protect them. 2. God animated him for his undertaking, (Jos_10:8): Fear not, that is, (1.) “Doubt not of the goodness of thy cause and the clearness of thy call; though it be to assist Gibeonites, thou art in the way of duty, and God is with thee of a truth.” (2.) “Dread not the power of the enemy; though so many kings are confederate against thee, and are resolved to make their utmost efforts for the reduction of Gibeon, and it may be will fight desperately in a desperate cause, yet let not this discourage thee, I have delivered them into thy hand;” and those can make neither resistance nor escape whom God has marked for destruction.

THE JOURNEY OF ISRAEL
delfin l. corona

Numbers 33 presents a detailed record of the list of places where the people of Israel established camps from Egypt to the east side of the Jordan river before they took possession of the promised land. Similar to the records of genealogies in Mathew and Luke, I thought that all it could offer is monotony and boredom in reading. Nevertheless, the principle of plenary inspiration of the Bible reminded me that there is no part of scripture that is void of any message. Every part of the inspired written Word always has a message about God and His dealing with His creation. Thus, in the attitude of prayer and seeking the mind of God, after careful repeated readings I come up with some lessons listed below.

1. God is a God of history
* Num 33:2 At the command of God Moses recorded the stages of their journey as they went on their way….

Clearly the passage shows it was God who caused the recording of their journey. All along the way and in every place they camped, God manifested His grace and mercy on one hand and miraculous power on the other in bringing them to a process of transformation from unbelieving slaves to a mighty believing warriors. In harmony with other parts of the scriptures I believe God’s interest was on providing the new generation of Israel, who qualified by faith to enter the promise land, and the generations yet to come, a documentary proof that it was He who emancipated them from their Egyptian slavery; and ultimately for the people to learn to establish their identity in Him alone.

Parallel to this thought of God’s miraculous act of saving Israel and in providing them a national identity, the hand of God is in every nation in the world in shaping their history to point them to the truth of His Lordship over all His creations.

2. History is His story
• Num 33:3 They set out from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month. On the day after the Passover, the people of Israel went out triumphantly in the sight of all the Egyptians.

Associated in the process of their emancipation is the institution of different colorful festivals. Verse three mentions the feast of the Passover. Elsewhere in the Torah of Moses and other parts of the Bible all other festivals and corresponding offerings are carefully laid down about which God instructed them to obey to the letter in their performance of it as they settle in Canaan .

The New Testament, specifically the book of Hebrews, teaches the fact that all the festivals in the Old Testament find their expression and fulfillment in Jesus Christ. For example, John 1:29 declares that Jesus is the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. Clearly it is with reference to the Passover lamb in the Old Testament. This simply says that Jesus was actively involved in the shaping of the nation of Israel. The history of Israel reveals the story of the transforming power of God. This is also true to all the rest of the nations of the world. History, therefore, is His story.

3. Life is a journey

As Israel was on a journey so are we, individually and corporately as a church. Concerning that, Paul wrote in 1Cor 10:1-11, a solemn admonition not to follow their attitude of evil and unbelief; specifically verse 11 says:
• All these things happened to them as examples for others, and they were written down as a warning for us. For we live at a time when the end is about to come.

In this journey of earthly life we speak of beginning and ending – our physical birth and death, respectively. From the secular perspective there are bad and good beginnings as there are those who were born deprived of comfort physically and materially, and there are those who were born in the beds of roses and with golden plates on their tables. Spiritually, however, all have bad beginnings as all had been born in sin. By the goodness of God, God offers a second beginning, and certainly a good beginning, which is realized when a person is born again in the Kingdom of God. What matters now is how we end this journey. It will be tragic if we started good with God and end up life in misery. Like Paul in 2Timothy 4:6-8, all of us desire a good ending. Below is a list of my suggestions on how to end well in our journey:

1. Live by God’s grace every day.
2. Break away from the past, believe God for the future, and learn to live in the present.
3. Be willing to put off the old man and put on the new man.
4. Let God’s purpose be always our burning desire every day.
5. Be blessed and be a blessing; help others along the way.
6. Learn to put your identity in God alone.

At least that’s the way I see it! dlc.
