Philippians is known as the โbook of joy,โ but its author was not in a fortunate circumstance when he wrote it. Paul the Apostle was in prison while writing this letter to the Philippians. Yet, he still found joy regardless of his situation.
Why was he still able to write about joy even when he was not in a good situation?

In Philippians chapter 1, the word โgospelโ is mentioned many times. This shows that the life of the Apostle Paul revolves around the gospel. It was his passion that drove him to be joyful despite his situation. His passion for the gospel ignited his joy.
In this generation, what are our passions? Could it be that the passion of our culture is money, fame, or relationships, where without these, people feel worthless?

Romans 1:16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
This only proves that until we experience the power of the gospel, we will never have gospel passion.
So as followers of Jesus, are you passionate about the gospel?

๐ Philippians 1:12
Paul had been imprisoned multiple times. He had no freedom and was chained to a Roman guard for years. As a prisoner, he could not go anywhere to freely share and preach the Word of God. His problem was his chains, but even so, he still had joy and still had the opportunity to advance Godโs kingdom.

๐ Philippians 1:12
Even in his imprisonment, he saw it as an opportunity for the gospel to spread. Because of his situation, the gospel reached the Roman guards, the household of Caesar (Philippians 4:22), and many people around him.
Philippians 1:14 also shows that many believers, who were once afraid to share the gospel, became more confident because of Paulโs passion and perspective.
Paulโs joy and purpose was not based on his freedom, but on his passion for the gospel and his perspective that even suffering can advance Christโs mission.
So like Paul, let us change our perspective. It could be that our confinement is Godโs assignment for us.
True joy is not dependent on circumstances but is rooted in Christ. When our passion is the gospel and our perspective is God-centered, even trials become platforms for His purpose. May we live with a joy that advances the gospel in every season.
