Text: Ezekiel 22:30
Theme: Standing in the Gap
Key Scripture
“So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one.”
— Ezekiel 22:30 (NKJV)
Introduction
God was searching for someone to stand in the gap—someone willing to stand before Him on behalf of the people.
But He found no one.
Because no one stood in the gap, God poured out His wrath (Ezekiel 22:31).
This shows us something powerful:
God looks for people who will intercede before judgment comes
Standing in the gap can delay, redirect, or even stop destruction
Standing in the gap means standing between God’s wrath and people’s need through prayer, obedience, and sacrifice.
What Does It Mean to Stand in the Gap?
To intercede for others
To pray when others are silent
To stand before God on behalf of sinful, broken, or lost people
To care enough to say, “Lord, spare them”
Biblical Examples of People Who Stood in the Gap
1. Abraham – Intercessor for S***m and Gomorrah
📖 Genesis 18:23–33
Abraham stood in the gap for wicked cities—S***m and Gomorrah.
Even though the people were sinful, Abraham interceded boldly.
He pleaded for 50 righteous people
God allowed him to go lower—45, 40, 30, 20, even 10
Abraham’s humility and boldness show us how to intercede with faith
👉 Even if our name is not Abraham, we are called to stand like Abraham
👉 God even commanded the angels based on Abraham’s intercession
2. Moses – Intercessor for Israel’s Sin
📖 Deuteronomy 9:18–25
The Israelites made a golden calf and worshiped it—idolatry before God.
God was angry and ready to destroy them.
But Moses:
Fasted 40 days and 40 nights
Prayed for forgiveness
Stood between God and Israel
👉 Moses’ intercession saved the nation
👉 Prayer and fasting are powerful tools to stand in the gap
3. Joshua and Caleb – Standing Against Murmuring
📖 Numbers 14:6–10
The Israelites murmured and rebelled after hearing the spies’ report.
God’s wrath was rising against the people.
Joshua and Caleb:
Stood in faith
Declared God’s promise
Interceded while others complained
👉 Murmuring brings judgment
👉 Faith and obedience bring God’s presence
👉 Incense represents the presence of God—intercession invites His presence
(You may connect this with spiritual maturity and discernment – cf. 2 Timothy 3:7 as a warning about people who never grow into truth.)
The Power of Desire and Persistent Intercession
God answers prayers in His time
Many miracles happen because someone refused to stop praying
Desire aligned with God’s will brings results
👉 Don’t stop interceding
👉 Your prayer may be the reason someone is spared
👉 Standing in the gap is valuable, powerful, and necessary
Conclusion
God is still asking the same question today:
“Who will stand in the gap?”
For families
For churches
For nations
For the lost
May God find us standing when He looks.
