WATCH | β€œO SENYOR TAGBALAY: KABSEMS’ DAIGON”

"O Senyor Tagbalay" is a traditional Hiligaynon Christmas carol and a cultural staple of the Daigon (caroling) tradition in the Western Visayas, particularly in Negros and Panay. The title translates to "O Lord/Master of the House," and the song serves as a respectful musical greeting. It is traditionally performed at the start of a caroling session to wake the homeowners and ask for their permission to share the story of the Nativity through music.

The lyrics of the song are deeply rooted in the biblical narrative of the Panunuluyan, which depicts Joseph and Mary’s desperate search for shelter in Bethlehem. It is sung from the perspective of St. Joseph, pleading with a homeowner to open their door to a "poor couple" (mag-asawang pobre) during a cold and weary night. By reenacting this humble plea, the song encourages the listener to practice hospitality and empathy, reflecting the true spirit of the Christmas season.

Beyond its religious meaning, the song is a vital piece of Visayan cultural heritage. While many modern Christmas songs have moved toward pop or Western influences, "O Senyor Tagbalay" preserves the local language and the formal, poetic style of the region's ancestors. It remains a powerful symbol of community connection, reminding both the singers and the listeners of their shared history and the importance of opening one's home and heart to others.

(DISCLAIMER: The seminarians did not sang the full Christmas narrative. Feel free to see the full lyrics of the song online)
