What is Arthritis?
Arthritis- inflammation of one or more joints. “Arthro” joint, “itis”- inflammation.
There are 100+ types, but the 2 most common are:
1. Osteoarthritis (OA) - "Wear and tear" arthritis. The cartilage in your joint thins out over time due to age, injury, or overuse.
2. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) - Autoimmune type. Your immune system attacks the lining of your joints. Even younger people can get it.
Arthritis Symptoms
Depends on the type, but common symptoms:
1. Joint pain - Hurts more in the morning or after resting
2. Stiffness - Hard to move the joint when you wake up, “locks up” for 30+ mins in RA
3. Swelling - The area around the joint is puffy and warm
4. Redness -
Skin around the joint turns red
5. Reduced range of motion- You can’t move the knee, fingers, shoulder, etc. fully anymore
6. Crepitus - “Crackling” or grinding sound when you move the joint in OA
7. Fatigue and fever- Common in RA because the whole body is affected
If you’ve had pain and swelling in your joints for 2+ weeks, best to see a doctor/orthopedist/rheumatologist.
Prevention of Arthritis
Not all arthritis can be prevented, especially genetic/autoimmune types. But you can lower your risk:
1. Maintain healthy weight: Every 1kg extra- 4kg extra pressure on your knees. Less weight, less wear.
2. Exercise regularly: Strengthen muscles around joints for support. Walking, swimming, yoga best.
3. Protect joints:
Don’t lift heavy things the wrong way. Use tools/assistive devices. Avoid repetitive same movements.
4. Don’t smoke:
Smoking increases risk of RA, makes OA worse.
5. Eat anti-inflammatory foods: Fish, vegetables, fruits, olive oil, nuts. Limit processed food, too much sugar.
6. Prevent joint injuries: Warm up before sports. Wear proper shoes/gear.
7. Manage blood sugar: Diabetes increases risk of OA.
Tips if You Have Arthritis
1. Move daily: “Motion is lotion”. Even 10 min walk/stretch. If joints don’t move, they get stiffer.
2. Heat, Cold therapy:
Warm towel/shower in the morning for stiffness. Ice pack 15 mins on swollen joints after activity.
3. Pacing:
Break tasks into smaller parts. Rest before you get too tired. “Spoon theory” helps.
4. Assistive devices: Cane, jar opener, grab bar in the bathroom. Less strain on your joints.
5. Good shoes:
Supportive, cushioned shoes reduce pressure on knees/hips/feet.
6. Sleep well:
7-8 hrs. Lack of sleep, you feel more pain the next day.
7. Manage stress: Stress makes pain feel worse. Try breathing, meditation, hobbies.
What Will You Do If You Have Arthritis
1. See a doctor: Get diagnosed if it’s OA, RA, or something else. Blood tests, X-ray needed. Rheumatologist for RA, Orthopedist for OA.
2. Follow treatment plan: Doctor may prescribe pain relievers, anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen, or meds for RA. Physical therapy helps a lot.
3. Stay active but smart: Exercise is medicine for arthritis. Swimming, walking are joint-friendly. Avoid high-impact sports.
4. Track your symptoms: Note what triggers pain - weather, food, activity. Helps doctor adjust treatment.
5. Join support groups: Arthritis can be frustrating. Talking to others with the same condition helps mentally/emotionally.
6. Don’t self-medicate long term:
Painkillers help but have side effects on kidney/liver if overused.
Natural / Home Care Habang Nagpapagaling*
Gamot + lifestyle = best combo:
1.) Pain relief: Warm compress sa umaga for stiffness, ice pack 15 mins pag namamaga after galaw
2.) Exercise: Swimming, walking, tai chi, yoga. "Use it or lose it" sa arthritis. Mas di gumalaw... mas titigas
2. Sundin ang treatment plan - Kung binigyan ka gamot, inumin on time. Kung sabi mag-PT, punta ka.
May ibang options pa.
4. Aralin ang "flare management"- Pag sumumpong at namaga bigla: rest + ice + gamot na ni-reseta. Tapos pag humupa, balik sa gentle exercise.
Arthritis is chronic, pero maraming tao nakaka-function ng normal with proper treatment.
May specific joint ka ba na masakit? Tuhod, kamay, o balakang?
Important⚠️
If your joints hurt, are swollen, and don’t go away for weeks, see a doctor for proper diagnosis and medication.
