With great pride and thanksgiving, the Archdiocese of Capiz and the Capiz Archdiocesan Social Action Center, congratulate the Most Rev. Jose F. Advincula, Jr., D.D., on his appointment as one of the new Cardinals of the Catholic Church.

May the almighty Father continue to guide you as you extend your many gifts with generosity and faithfulness to His people and the rest of His creation.

Pope Francis made the announcement during his Sunday Angelus in the Vatican and said the new cardinals would be elevated at a consistory on Nov. 28.

Mgsr. Joe is the Philippines ninth cardinal, following cardinals Orlando Quevedo, Gaudencio Rosales, Luis Antonio Tagle, Jose Sanchez, Ricardo Vidal, Jaime Sin, Julio Rosales and Rufino Santos.

As Cardinal, Msgr. Joe will serve as a member of the Sacred College of Cardinals, whose duties include electing the pope, acting as his principal counselors, and aiding in the government of the Roman Catholic Church throughout the world.

Cardinals also serve as chief officials of the Roman Curia (the papal bureaucracy), as bishops of major dioceses, and often as papal envoys. They wear distinctive red attire, are addressed as “Eminence,” and are known as princes of the church.
