“Respect Your Parents”
Sometimes, we hear the word “obey” and think it is only about following instructions. But verse, Ephesians 6:1-3 KJV reminds us that honoring our parents is also part of how we honor God.
We may not always agree with everything our parents say or do. We may have different thoughts, different ways of seeing things and as we grow older, we begin to make decisions for ourselves, but we should never forget the respect and honor that they deserve.
Our parents may not be perfect, just as we are not perfect. There may be moments when we misunderstand each other or words may be said that hurt. But still, God teaches us to keep a heart that knows how to honor or respect.
And yes, respect goes both ways. Parents also have a responsibility to treat their children with love, patience, understanding and respect. Honoring our parents does not mean that hurtful words or wrong actions should simply be ignored. It means that even when things are difficult, we choose to respond in a way that reflects what God teaches us.
There is something important to understand. Saying “respect goes both ways” does not remove the command God gave to children. Our parents are to be honored because God Himself commanded it. Their imperfections do not cancel that command. We do not honor them only when they get everything right. We honor them because God told us to.
And sometimes, honoring them does not mean we agree with everything. It means we choose to speak with respect, to appreciate what they have done and to remember the sacrifices they made for us.
At the same time, we should remember that parents are also learning. No one is perfect and becoming a parent does not mean that a person suddenly has all the answers or never makes mistakes. Parents are learning how to guide, protect, discipline and love their children, just as children are learning how to grow, obey and understand their parents. We may not see everything from their perspective now, but someday, some of us may become parents too. When that time comes, we may realize even more clearly that parenting requires patience, wisdom, humility and grace. Remembering this can help us show understanding while still honoring our parents.
God sees the heart behind our obedience. And when we follow His Word, we are not only showing love to our parents, we are also showing that we value what God has commanded.
The Word of God also gives us a promise. When children obey and honor their parents according to His Word, He says that it may be well with them and that they may live long on the earth. This is not something we should overlook. God connects honoring our father and mother with a promise, meaning that He blesses children who honor their parents with a long life.
Obedience is not always easy but God’s commandments come with purpose and His promises remind us that following His ways is never in vain.
Ephesians 6:1-3 KJV
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;
That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.”
May we never become too grown to honor our parents, too busy to appreciate them or too hurt to choose respect. Life changes, people change and one day we may wish for more time with them. While we still have that time, let us love them, honor them and show them that they matter.
