VIVA SAN JUAN BAUTISTA! Today is the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist.
Celebrated on June 24, this solemnity commemorates the birth of the man who would become Christ's greatest herald and the forerunner of the Lord. John the Baptist emerged from the desert as a prophetic voice calling Israel to repentance and preparation for the coming Messiah. His mission was to prepare the hearts of God's people through baptism and preaching, pointing always toward Jesus as "the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world."
The baptism of Christ by John marked a pivotal moment in salvation history, with the Father's voice and the descent of the Holy Spirit confirming Jesus as the beloved Son. John's unwavering witness to Christ—even before crowds and eventually before his own death—exemplifies radical faithfulness to God's truth. He lived with Gospel simplicity in the wilderness, rejecting worldly comfort and status to serve his prophetic calling. John was imprisoned and eventually martyred by Herod for his courageous rebuke of sin, dying as a witness to holiness and justice.
The Church honors him as the greatest of the prophets, the bridge between the Old and New Testaments, and a model of humble service to Christ. His feast, uniquely positioned at the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, carries symbolic weight: he must increase while Christ increases—a paradox of spiritual fruitfulness. Every Christian is called to share in John's vocation: to diminish so that Christ may be exalted in our lives and in the world.

O God, who raised up Saint John the Baptist
to make ready a nation fit for Christ the Lord,
give your people, we pray,
the grace of spiritual joys
and direct the hearts of all the faithful
into the way of salvation and peace.
