Be A Berean, Not Just a Believer

Many Christians know what they believe, but fewer can explain why they believe it from Scripture.

The Bereans lived in the city of Berea in Macedonia, which is now part of modern-day Greece. During Paul's second missionary journey, Paul and Silas arrived in Berea after persecution forced them to leave Thessalonica (Acts 17:10). The people of Berea did not reject what Paul and Silas said. They did not just believe it without thinking. They did something that the Bible says is very good.

"Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." Acts 17:11

Why did Luke describe the Bereans as being of "more noble character"? it was not because they were rich or important. It was because they were willing to learn and they wanted to know what God’s Word said.

They were happy to listen to the message. They also checked the Scriptures every day to make sure what Paul said was true. This is important. Even though Paul was an apostle personally commissioned by the risen Christ, the people of Berea still wanted to make sure what he said was in line with God's Word. Paul did not get angry with them for doing this. Instead, Luke commended them for it by describing them as "more noble."

This passage teaches an important principle about Gods Word: The ultimate authority is God's Word. Even those who teach with genuine authority must faithfully proclaim what God has revealed in Scripture.

Pastors and teachers are supposed to teach us what the Bible says. Scripture is the final authority for Christian faith and practice. We should always check what they say against God's Word.

Being a Berean does not mean we should be critical or negative when we read the Bible. It means we should be humble and eager to learn. We should not believe everything we hear. We should not reject everything we hear. Instead, we should carefully check the Scriptures. Ask, does this teaching really come from God?

There are many voices in the world today. Podcasts, social media, books and online sermons. The church needs people who are, like the Bereans people who love the truth and want to learn from God's Word for themselves.

Do not follow a preacher just because he is popular.
Do not reject a message just because it is hard to hear.
Open your Bible and read it. Check the context. Read passages in their context and compare Scripture with Scripture. Let God’s Word be your authority.

A Berean is not someone who questions everything. A Berean is someone who tests everything by God's Word.

"You're enrolling in Bible School? So, you want to become a pastor?"

That's one of the most common questions people ask, but the answer is not necessarily.

Enrolling in Bible School does not automatically mean that you are preparing to become a pastor.

Bible School is about being equipped, not about forcing a specific calling. It is a place where believers learn God's Word, grow spiritually, develop Christlike character, and become better prepared to serve wherever God places them.

Not everyone who studies in Bible School becomes a pastor. Some become Sunday School teachers, youth leaders, missionaries, worship team members, church workers, marketplace professionals who faithfully represent Christ, or simply stronger disciples who serve their families, workplaces, and local churches more effectively.

The purpose of Bible School is not to decide your calling for you—it is to prepare you for whatever God has already planned for your life.

The better question is: "Handa bala ako nga tugutan ang Dios nga preparahon Niya ako sa bisan ano nga buluhaton nga ipahimo Niya sa akon?"

God is looking for hearts that are willing to learn, grow, and obey. Whether He calls you into full-time ministry or to serve Him in your profession and community, His Word will always equip you for every good work.

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." — 2 Timothy 3:16–17

Don't let fear or misconceptions stop you from growing. You don't enroll in Bible School because you've already become something—you enroll because you want God to shape you into the person He has called you to be.

Our IFBC–Guimaras Extension students were assigned to different churches for A Back-to-Back Bible School Promotions at Shekinah FGC (Lawi) and Maranatha FGC (Malbang).

We thank God for the positive response of those answering His call. May more lives continue to say, "Yes, Lord," and serve Him faithfully.
