Fiesta Candelaria 2026: Coronation of Our Lady of Candles

The Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral invites everyone to take part in the Fiesta Candelaria 2026, a Marian celebration honoring Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, lovingly known as Our Lady of Candles, Patroness of Western Visayas.

One of the highlights of this fiesta is the solemn Coronation of Our Lady of Candles, to be held on February 1, 2026, after the 5:00 PM Mass, at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles, Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral, Iloilo City. The coronation rites will be led by Most Reverend Midyphil B. Billones, D.D., Archbishop of Jaro.

Come with your family and loved ones, light a candle, and let us celebrate as one people under the loving care of Our Lady of Candles.

Nuestra Señora de la Purificación y la Candelaria (English: Our Lady of Purification and Candle) is a venerated image of the Blessed Virgin Mary enshrined in Jaro Cathedral and the patroness of Western Visayas.

The devotion to Candelaria de Jaro derives from the original Virgin of Candelaria in Canarias, Spain and its feast day or Candlemas is celebrated every February 2.

Pope John Paul II (now a papal saint) personally crowned the image on February 20, 1981. It is the first Marian image in Asia crowned by a pope and saint in person. Later, the image is declared as the patroness of Western Visayas via decree Quod Urbes on 1982.

History

Tradition recounts the statue's first appearance in 1587, when a group of fishermen found it floating in the Iloilo River. The fishermen initially could not lift the image due to its weight, but when they decided to bring it to Jaro, the image suddenly became easier to carry. The statue was initially placed in a small niche near the apex of the local church's central spire. Folklore speaks of the statue's growth in size over the centuries, to the point that it was transferred to the balcony. The image's shrine is accessible today by a flight of steps attached to the cathedral's northeastern façade.

The statue was declared patroness of the Western Visayas by Pope John Paul II who, in person, canonically crowned this image on February 20, 1981, during his first Apostolic Visit to the Philippines. It is thus the only Marian statue in the Philippines personally crowned by the Pontiff (and saint) instead of a proxy legate.

Feast

The Feast of Our Lady of the Candles, also known as the Jaro Fiesta, is an annual religious festival celebrated every February 2 in the district of Jaro. It is considered one of the largest Marian feasts in the country. The celebration is district-wide, with the main activities centered around Jaro Plaza and the Jaro Cathedral.

Fiesta Candelaria 2026 | Discurso sa Mahal nga Birhen sang Candelaria

As part of the celebration of Fiesta Candelaria 2026, the faithful are invited to gather in prayer and reflection for the Discurso to be offered by Kayla Mariel Jardeleza Pasaporte on February 2, 2026, after the Solemn Procession at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles, Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral.

Kayla Mariel Jardeleza Pasaporte, a resident of Tagbac, Jaro, Iloilo City, is the daughter of Captain Kim Oliver Pasaporte and Mrs. Jinkee Jardeleza Pasaporte. She is recognized for her strong sense of faith, discipline, and commitment to excellence in both academic and community life. Her involvement in church activities, youth formation, and school organizations reflects a deep desire to serve God and others with humility and responsibility.

May we all come together as one community to listen, pray, and be renewed by the light of faith as we honor our beloved Nuestra Señora dela Candelaria.

The Solemn Vesperal Mass on February 1, 2026 at 5:00PM will be presided by His Grace, Most Rev. Jose Romeo O. Lazo, D.D., Archbishop-emeritus of Jaro, and the Rite of Coronation of the Image at the Cathedral’s Balcony will proceed right after with His Grace Most Rev. Midyphil B. Billones, D.D., Archbishop of Jaro

On February 2, 2026 at 7:00 in the morning, the Solemn Pontifical Mass with Blessing of Candles will be presided by His Grace Most Rev. Midyphil B. Billones, D.D., Archbishop of Jaro.

In the afternoon, following the Solemn Procession, the 5:30PM Solemn Concelebrated Mass will be presided by His Excellency Most Rev. Ruben C. Labajo, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Prosperidad in Agusan del Sur.

LOOK: FIESTA CANDELARIA 2026 PERDON CANDLE

One of the exceptional symbols of devotion to Nuestra Señora dela Candelaria is the Perdon Candle which is usually lit when asking for favors from Nanay Cande and when times of danger and calamity come.

Every February 2, the Church commemorates the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the current Liturgical Calendar. The Feast of the Purification of Mary, hence the title "Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria y Purificacion," recalls Lord's offering in the temple by His blessed Mother, as the Victim who should reconcile God and man.

On this day, candles are blessed as a fitting symbol of God, the All-Pure, the Omnipresent, the Vivifier of all things, the Source of all grace and enlightenment, and of Lord Jesus Christ as the Light and Savior of the World. The rite of candle blessing during the February 2 Eucharist echoes Simeon's words, who described Our Lord as "the light to the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of Thy people Israel" (cf. Luke 2:32).

Devotees believed that these candles were miraculous and that they should be lit in times of need, especially during calamities, for protection. All other miracles we attribute to Mary, our Mother and the Lady of Candles, who bears Jesus, the Light of the World, the refuge of all and the Savior of Mankind.

The 2026 Perdon Candles will be available at Libreria Candelaria, Jaro Cathedral and other affiliated retailers
