A Calendar in Wood: How the Retablo Mayor Maps a Chronology of Faith from Ascension Sunday
[ The arrangement of the images of the Retablo Mayor speaks of a Chronology of Events beginning with the Ascension Sunday Sunday ]
Today, we celebrate Ascension Sunday—the glorious moment 40 days after the Resurrection of our Lord, beautifully captured in the painting directly above the retablo inside the church dome. But did you know there is a deeper, hidden narrative waiting to be discovered right before your eyes?
The centuries-old, Gothic-Renaissance Molo Church (St. Anne Parish) is world-famous for its striking twin spires and timeless coral-stone façade. Yet, its most profound sacred treasure stands quietly within: the majestic retablo behind the main altar.
More than just a beautiful backdrop, the retablo is a living catechism carved into wood and stone. Its ornate columns, soaring tiers, and symmetrical lines naturally draw the eyes upward—just as they inspire the soul to look heavenward.
What truly makes this retablo extraordinary, however, is the unique, chronological arrangement of its sacred images. It acts as a visual liturgical calendar, a rare and brilliant design feature not commonly found in other churches.
At the very peak, within the dome, the breathtaking painting of the Ascension of Our Lord ushered by angels sets the stage, commemorating Christ’s return to heaven. As your eyes move downward, the saints, angels, and holy figures unfold a sacred story, visually tracing the rhythm of the Catholic Church's liturgical year.
The Heavenly Hierarchy: A Chronological Timeline

📌 The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity (Sunday after Pentecost)
Honoring the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
📌 Corpus Christi (Sunday after Holy Trinity)
Celebrating the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, reposed right below in the tabernacle.
📌 The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (Friday after Corpus Christi)
A testament to Christ's boundless love for humanity.
📌 The Immaculate Heart of Mary (Saturday after the Sacred Heart)
Honoring the devotion and maternal love of the Blessed Mother.
📌 The Feast of St. Anne (July 26)
The grand culmination celebrating the parish’s beloved patroness.
At the absolute center of this theological masterpiece rests the patronal image: St. Anne with the young Blessed Virgin Mary. This centerpiece powerfully reminds us of the roots of our salvation history, our local devotion, and the enduring legacy of faith passed down from generation to generation.
Whether this layout was a deliberate theological blueprint by the early friars or a beautiful act of divine providence, this heavenly hierarchy serves as a profound map of faith, art, and salvation.
"Where art meets liturgy, and beauty meets belief."
The next time you step inside the sacred halls of Molo Church, pause before the altar. Look closer, gaze deeper, and let the visual story of salvation unfold before your eyes.
Blessed Ascension Sunday to all!
