We thank the Lord for the faithful ministry of 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 in equipping pastors and church leaders here in the Philippines. Through their labor, many have been strengthened in sound doctrine and trained to handle the Word of truth with care and conviction.

We praise God for His grace in raising up workers for His harvest, and we thank Carey International for their partnership in advancing the gospel and the glory of Christ among the nations.

May the fruit of this training abound to the praise of His glorious grace.

The word “𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲” comes from two Greek words: 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘴 (God) and 𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘰𝘴 (word or study). When combined, the term simply means “the study of God.” Theology is the pursuit of knowing the mind and character of God as He has revealed Himself in Scripture. It is vital because what we believe about God shapes everything about our lives and worship.

The study of theology, then, is nothing more than diligently searching God’s Word to discover what He has made known about Himself. We need biblical and sound theology because it shapes how we view God, and right understanding leads to true worship. However, correct theological knowledge alone does not guarantee genuine faith or godly character. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘶𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘦.

Yet, it is possible to study theology with a wrong motivation. In John 5:39, Jesus spoke to the Jewish leaders and said, “𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘱𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦.” Just a few verses later, in verse 44, He exposed the true condition of their hearts: “𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦, 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘎𝘰𝘥?” Their motivation in studying God’s Word was not to honor Him, but to receive glory from others. They loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.

The point is this: diligent study of theology is good when it leads us to worship the one true God. But studying theology with wrong motives is dangerous, for it steals the glory that belongs to God alone.

The question you must ask yourself to examine your motivation in studying God’s Word is this: Which glory are you seeking? Are you searching the Word for the glory of God? Or are you seeking to grow in your expertise and knowledge so that people may admire you? Is God becoming more desirable and treasured in your heart as you study theology?

Brothers and sisters in Christ, let us carefully guard our motives in studying the Word, lest we rob God of the glory that belongs to Him alone. If you think you are growing merely because you have gained more knowledge about God, then you are mistaken. Proverbs 1:7 reminds us, “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦.” True growth in knowledge begins with reverence, humility, and worship.

You are not truly growing in the knowledge of God if your study does not lead you to bow in awe before the one true God—our Lord Jesus Christ. 𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝.

The Bible, God's Holy Word should be our ultimate authority for what we believe (𝙛𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙝) and what we do (𝙥𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚). It stands above human authority, church tradition, and personal opinions. Therefore, we must never allow anything that contradicts God's Word to shape our actions or influence our thinking. God's Word is the absolute truth. It will never fail, and it will stand forever.

We give all glory to God for a rich and edifying week of studying His Word through the modular class on 𝐁𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠. It was a week of deep reflection, instruction, and equipping for the ministry.

We thank the Lord for His faithful servant, 𝙋𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙡 𝙈𝙪𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙧, whom He has used mightily to equip pastors and leaders here in the Philippines. We are grateful for his faithful labor in the ministry of the Word, all for the glory of God.

Our deep thanks also to 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 for facilitating this vital work of equipping pastors and leaders here in the Philippines. This ministry is a means of grace to many.

Let us continue to pray for these pastors and leaders—that they may be faithful stewards of God’s truth, serving with all humility for the glory of Christ and the advancement of His Kingdom.

Paul begins his letter with glorious praise, eager to give glory and honor to the Triune God—𝘍𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳, 𝘚𝘰𝘯, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘺 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵—for all that He has done for us in and through Christ Jesus our Lord. 𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭 before the foundation of the world and for predestining us for adoption to Himself as sons through Jesus Christ (𝘷𝘷. 4–5). 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐬 through His incarnation and by His blood, securing the forgiveness of our sins (𝘷𝘷. 6𝘣–10). 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐮𝐬, being the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of His glory (𝘷𝘷. 11–14). Paul’s heart overflows because of the astonishing spiritual blessings that belong to all who are in Christ.

What glorious riches we have in Christ! These blessings far surpass anything this world can offer—greater, higher, and more secure than all material wealth. How amazing it is to think that the holy God would set His saving and sovereign love upon us- sinners who have willfully rebelled against His holy name.

Have you paused to reflect on the spiritual riches that are yours in Christ? Do you treasure them more than the temporary comforts of this world? How does knowing you are chosen, redeemed, and sealed by the Triune God shape the way you live today?

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, everything in this world is fleeting, transient, and momentary. But Jesus isn’t. If you are in Him, and if you have turned away from your sins and put your faith in Christ alone- it is because God, in eternity past, determined to set his love upon you “𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡”. In Christ, you are truly rich. You are well supplied. You have an “inheritance that is 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚, 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙙, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙪𝙣𝙛𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙠𝙚𝙥𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪…” (1 𝘗𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳 1:4) Even now, God has blessed you with “every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places” (𝘌𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘴 1:3). In Christ, you have been made holy and blameless. In Christ, you have been adopted as a beloved son of the Father. These spiritual blessings remind us of the incomparable value of our inheritance in God’s family.

As Charles Spurgeon beautifully expressed it,

𝙂𝙤𝙙 𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙝 𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙪𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙡 𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨. 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩, 𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙩, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨; 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙚.”

May we live each day in the joy and confidence of our calling, reflecting the grace that has made us His own. And as we walk worthy of this high calling, may our lives bring glory to the Triune God who has lavished us with every spiritual blessing.

𝙄𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙞𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮, 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙜𝙤 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙣—𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙟𝙪𝙙𝙜𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙡?

Friend, if you are not yet saved, understand this: you are not just morally weak—you are spiritually dead (𝘌𝘱𝘩 2:1), separated from a holy God by your sin (𝘐𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘢𝘩 59:2). No amount of good works, religious rituals, or human effort can rescue you from your spiritual bankruptcy (𝘌𝘱𝘩 2:8-9). You stand guilty and condemned before a holy God (𝘙𝘰𝘮 3:23; 𝘑𝘰𝘩𝘯 3:18).

𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐆𝐨𝐝, in His sovereign mercy and love, sent His Son, 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭, who lived the perfect, sinless life you could never live. On the cross, 𝐇𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐨𝐝 that your sins deserved (𝘐𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘢𝘩 53:5–6), and through His death and resurrection, 𝐇𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐥 (𝘙𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘴 6:9–10). Turn away from your sins and trust in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation. In Christ alone, there is hope, righteousness, and eternal life.

𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐝, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐠𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮. We never move past the gospel—it is not merely the doorway into the Christian life, but the very foundation and substance of it. The gospel is not just a diving board we leap from; it is the entire pool in which we live, grow, and swim daily in God’s grace.

May we embrace the glorious gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is our hope, our life, and our only foundation—both now and for all eternity.
