The Message: âAm I Righteous Before Godâ
Scripture Reading: Genesis 38:1-30
Messenger: Pastor Shim
This chapter tells the story of Judah, Jacobâs fourth son, who left home and married. He had three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. Tamar, Erâs wife, became a widow after God took Erâs life for his wickedness. Judah then instructed Onan to father a child with Tamar, but Onanâs refusal led to the same fate. Judah sent Tamar back to her fatherâs house, intending to withhold Shelah from her.
Seeking justice, Tamar disguised herself as a pr******te and became pregnant by Judah. Unaware of her identity, Judah later ordered her ex*****on upon hearing of her pregnancy. However, Tamar revealed his seal, cord, and staff as proof of his involvement. Realizing his wrongdoing, Judah admitted she was more righteous than he. Tamar later gave birth to twins.
At some point, Judah reflects our own tendenciesâwe can be lenient and biased toward ourselves. It is easy to see the faults of others, yet we often fail to recognize our own. In todayâs fast-paced world, where everything moves quicklyâfood, technology, and even human interactionsâwe are also quick to judge. We rarely pause to reflect and ask, âIf I were in their place, would I judge myself the same way?"
As Christians, we are not called to point out othersâ wrongdoings while ignoring our own. Our righteousness comes from God, not from ourselves, and we are saved by grace, not personal merit. Instead of looking down on others, we should look upâhumbly seeking Godâs guidance, recognizing our own sins, and sincerely praying for both His forgiveness and the well-being of others.
