Quick Story 🌹 of the Tilma

The devotion goes back to 1531 in Tepeyac, Mexico, when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego, an Indigenous convert to Christianity.

According to the traditional account, Mary entrusted Juan Diego with a message for Bishop Juan de Zumárraga. When Juan Diego opened his tilma a traditional cloak roses fell from it, and the miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was found impressed upon the cloth.

Her hands are joined in prayer, her head is bowed, and she stands surrounded by rays of light. The symbolism has been interpreted within the Catholic tradition as expressing humility, prayer, God’s presence, and Mary’s role as mother and intercessor.

Her message to Juan Diego is often remembered through the words:

“Am I not here, I who am your Mother?”

That message gives special meaning to the 2026 pilgrimage: Mary comes not simply as an object of devotion, but as a spiritual invitation to return to Christ, strengthen faith, care for the poor, and place the Filipino people under God’s protection.

On this blessed 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐲 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲, we are reminded of the endless love and mercy of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

No matter our past, our sins, or our struggles, His mercy is greater than all. He calls us not to be afraid, but to trust in Him with all our hearts. As He said, “𝙅𝙚𝙨𝙪𝙨, 𝙄 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙔𝙤𝙪.”

Today, let us open our hearts to His grace, seek forgiveness, and extend mercy to others just as we have received it. May this day renew our faith, strengthen our hope, and fill us with peace.

Let us remember: His mercy is not just for today, but for every moment of our lives.
