Vara Alta! Para saan? Sino ang pwedeng humawak nito?

Ang vara alta ay isang baston na katumbas ng 'rod of superiority' o 'staff of authority.' Sa Espanya, tinatawag itong Varas Junta de Gobierno, Varas de Presidencia, at Varas de Hermandad. Tinatangan ito ng mga pangunahing tagapangasiwa o may posisyon sa samahan ng mga deboto na kung tawagin ay hermandad at cofradia. Simbolo ito ng awtoridad, at kataas-taasan.

Sa pagbabahagi ni Louie Neil de la Cruz (2022) ilan sa mga lumang larawan ng Cofradia del Santo Entierro de Pasay noong 1920s at 1960s ay nagpapakita ng mga Hermano at Hermana Mayor na may tangan na Vara Alta. Kapuna-puna ang pagkakahawig nito sa mga ginagamit sa kasalukuyan.

Ayon kay Augusto Marcelino "Toto" R. Gonzalez III (2022), dumalas itong makita sa Pilipinas noong panahon na nagsisimula ang Intramuros Grand Marian Procession at mga prusisyon na pinangungunahan ni Former First Lady Imelda Marcos. Noong 1970s, nakita niyang ginagamit ito ng mga Santo enthusiasts gaya nina Danny Dolor, Nikki Legaspi, Dez Bautista, Carling Mercado, Sonny Viana, at Don Ado Escudero. Idinagdag ni Gonzales na maaring inspirasyon nila ang pre-war era kung saan may hawak na simbolo ang mga sagala sa Santacruzan.

Sa kasalukuyan, ginagamit ito ng mga Filipino bilang simbolo ng tungkulin na iniatas ng Simbahan para sa isang laiko. Ang maaring tumangan ng vara alta ay:

a. Punong Tagapamahala ng Komite o Samahan sa Simbahan
b. Pangunahing Donante ng Proyekto o Gawaing Simbahan
c. Hermano at Hermana Mayor ng mga Kapistahan

Hindi iminumungkahi ng akdang ito ang pagtangan ng Vara Alta upang tukuyin ang Camarero sa mga prusisyon sa Pilipinas. Panata ang pagiging tagapangalaga ng banal na imahen na may kalakip na tungkulin ng pagpapanatili nito. Hindi ito posisyon o atas ng katungkulan na kailangang tukuyin habang nasa prusisyon.

Laging tandaan ang tunay na kahulugan ng prusisyon ayon sa turo ng Simbahan–pagpapahayag ng pananampalataya. Mababasa sa Directoy of Popular Piety and the Liturgy (Talata 247) ang importansiya nito: “To preserve the character of processions as manifestations of faith... From a theological perspective, it is important to emphasize that a procession is a sign of the Church's condition, the pilgrimage of the People of God, with Christ and after Christ, aware that in this world it has no lasting dwelling....”

Samantala, tampok sa larawan ang mga disenyo ng Vara Alta mula kay Pedro Palenciano Olivares. Ito ay ginawa niya noong 2009 para sa Hermandad Santisima Virgen de la Cabeza de Màlaga.

St. Alfonso Maria Liguori is the oldest Doctor who died at the age of 90. It only took 84 years from the time of his death before he was made Doctor.

This day, JANUARY 23, as we celebrate the BIRTHDAY of the BELOVED FATHER of the Archdiocese of Jaro, the thousands and more catechists (seniors and juniors) and all supporters of the catechetical programs of the Archdiocese unite in PRAYERFUL WISHES to the FIRST CATECHIST of the archdiocese.

Thank you dear archbishop for journeying with all your catechists, the beautiful plans for the catechetical programs of the archdiocese especially the actualization of the desire of Pope Francis in his motu propio "Antiquum MInisterium" that leads to the desire of RE-OPENING the Pius XII Catechetical Institute.

If this comes into reality, this truly is one of the GREAT LEGACIES of our dear bishop. We join you bishop in this quest and prayerful wish.
