Beloved:
We receive from him whatever we ask,
because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.
And his commandment is this:
we should believe in the name of his Son, ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ ๐•ฎ๐–๐–—๐–Ž๐–˜๐–™,
and love one another just as he commanded us.
Those who keep his commandments remain in him, and he in them,
and the way we know that he remains in us
is from the Spirit whom he gave us.

Beloved, do not trust every spirit
but test the spirits to see whether they belong to ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰,
because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
This is how you can know the Spirit of ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰:
every spirit that acknowledges ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ ๐•ฎ๐–๐–—๐–Ž๐–˜๐–™ come in the flesh
belongs to ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰,
and every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus
does not belong to ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰.
This is the spirit of the antichrist
who, as you heard, is to come,
but in fact is already in the world.
You belong to ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰, children, and you have conquered them,
for the one who is in you
is greater than the one who is in the world.
They belong to the world;
accordingly, their teaching belongs to the world,
and the world listens to them.
We belong to ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰, and anyone who knows ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ listens to us,
while anyone who does not belong to ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ refuses to hear us.
This is how we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit.

When ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ heard that John had been arrested,
he withdrew to Galilee.
He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea,
in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet
might be fulfilled:

Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles,
the people who sit in darkness
have seen a great light,
on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death
light has arisen.

From that time on, ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ began to preach and say,
โ€œRepent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.โ€

He went around all of Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom,
and curing every disease and illness among the people.
His fame spread to all of Syria,
and they brought to him all who were sick with various diseases
and racked with pain,
those who were possessed, lunatics, and paralytics,
and he cured them.
And great crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, and Judea,
and from beyond the Jordan followed him.

Now this nearness of ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ to his people is one of the ways he has done things since the beginning, even of the Old Testament. He said to his people: โ€œImagine: what nation has its ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰'s so near to it as I am near to you?โ€ (cf. Dt 4:7). And this nearness became flesh in ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜.

This is a joyful message: ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ came to visit us in person, by becoming man. He did not embrace our human condition out of duty, no, but out of love. For love, he took on our human nature, for one embraces what one loves. ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ took our human nature because he loves us and desires freely to give us the salvation that, alone and unaided, we cannot hope to attain. Brothers and sisters:
Let us give thanks to the Father,
who has made you fit to share
in the inheritance of the holy ones in light.
He delivered us from the power of darkness
and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,
in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

He is the image of the invisible ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰,
the firstborn of all creation.
For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth,
the visible and the invisible,
whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers;
all things were created through him and for him.
He is before all things,
and in him all things hold together.
He is the head of the body, the church.
He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead,
that in all things he himself might be preeminent.
For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell,
and through him to reconcile all things for him,
making peace by the blood of his cross
through him, whether those on earth or those in heaven.

Even the soldiers jeered at him.
As they approached to offer him wine they called out,
"If you are King of the Jews, save yourself."
Above him there was an inscription that read,
"This is the King of the Jews."

Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜, saying,
"Are you not the ๐•ฎ๐–๐–—๐–Ž๐–˜๐–™?

The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply,
"Have you no fear of ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰,
for you are subject to the same condemnation?
And indeed, we have been condemned justly,
for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes,
but this man has done nothing criminal."
Then he said,
"๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
He replied to him,
"Amen, I say to you,

On the cross, we see a single phrase: โ€œThis is the King of the Jewsโ€ (Lk 23:38). That is ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜โ€™ title: he is a king. Yet as we gaze upon him, our idea of a king is turned upside down. When we try to visualize a king, what comes to mind is a powerful man seated on a throne with magnificent insignia, a sceptre in his hand and precious rings on his fingers, speaking in solemn tones to his subjects. That, more or less, is what we imagine. Looking at ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜, though, we see the complete opposite. He is not comfortably enthroned, but hanging on a gibbet. The God who โ€œcasts down the mighty from their thronesโ€ (Lk 1:52) appears as a slave executed by those in power. Appareled only with nails and thorns, stripped of everything yet rich in love, from his throne on the cross he no longer teaches the crowds by his words; he no longer lifts his hands as a teacher. He does more: pointing a finger at no one, he opens his arms to all. That is how he shows himself to be our king: with open arms. (โ€ฆ) Only by entering into his embrace do we understand: we come to realize that ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ went to this extreme, even to the paradox of the cross, in order to embrace every one of us, no matter how far distant we may be from him: he embraces our death, our pain, our poverty, our weakness. He embraced all of it. He became a slave so that each of us could become a son. As King Antiochus was traversing the inland provinces,
he heard that in Persia there was a city called Elymais,
famous for its wealth in silver and gold,
and that its temple was very rich,
containing gold helmets, breastplates, and weapons
left there by Alexander, son of Philip,
king of Macedon, the first king of the Greeks.
He went therefore and tried to capture and pillage the city.
But he could not do so,
because his plan became known to the people of the city
who rose up in battle against him.
So he retreated and in great dismay withdrew from there
to return to Babylon.

While he was in Persia, a messenger brought him news
that the armies sent into the land of Judah had been put to flight;
that Lysias had gone at first with a strong army
and been driven back by the children of Israel;
that they had grown strong
by reason of the arms, men, and abundant possessions
taken from the armies they had destroyed;
that they had pulled down the Abomination
which he had built upon the altar in Jerusalem;
and that they had surrounded with high walls
both the sanctuary, as it had been before,
and his city of Beth-zur.

When the king heard this news,
he was struck with fear and very much shaken.
Sick with grief because his designs had failed, he took to his bed.
There he remained many days, overwhelmed with sorrow,
for he knew he was going to die.

So he called in all his Friends and said to them:
"Sleep has departed from my eyes,
for my heart is sinking with anxiety.
I said to myself: 'Into what tribulation have I come,
and in what floods of sorrow am I now!
Yet I was kindly and beloved in my rule.'
But I now recall the evils I did in Jerusalem,
when I carried away all the vessels of gold and silver
that were in it, and for no cause
gave orders that the inhabitants of Judah be destroyed.
I know that this is why these evils have overtaken me;
and now I am dying, in bitter grief, in a foreign land."

From the Gospel according to ๐•ท๐–š๐–๐–Š 20:27-40

Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection,
came forward and put this question to ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜, saying,
"Teacher, Moses wrote for us,
If someone's brother dies leaving a wife but no child,
his brother must take the wife
and raise up descendants for his brother.
Now there were seven brothers;
the first married a woman but died childless.
Then the second and the third married her,
and likewise all the seven died childless.
Finally the woman also died.
Now at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be?
For all seven had been married to her."
๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ said to them,
"The children of this age marry and remarry;
but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age
and to the resurrection of the dead
neither marry nor are given in marriage.
They can no longer die,
for they are like angels;
and they are the children of ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰
because they are the ones who will rise.
That the dead will rise
even Moses made known in the passage about the bush,
when he called '๐•ท๐–”๐–—๐–‰'
the ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ of Abraham, the ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ of Isaac, and the ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ of Jacob;
and he is not ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ of the dead, but of the living,
for to him all are alive."
Some of the scribes said in reply,
"Teacher, you have answered well."
And they no longer dared to ask him anything.

With this response, first and foremost, ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ invites His interlocutors โ€” and us too โ€” to consider that this earthly dimension in which we now live is not the only dimension, but that there is another, no longer subject to death, which will fully manifest that we are children of ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰. It is of great comfort and hope to listen to this simple and clear word of ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ about life beyond death; we need it very much especially in our time, so rich in knowledge about the universe but so lacking in wisdom about eternal life. (โ€ฆ) ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ responds that life belongs to ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰, who loves us and cares very deeply about us, to the point of linking His name to ours (โ€ฆ) Life exists where there is [a] bond, communion, brotherhood; and it is a life stronger than death when it is built on true relationships and bonds of fidelity. On the contrary, there is no life where one has the presumption of belonging only to oneself and of living as an island: death prevails in these attitudes. It is selfishness. Judas and his brothers said,
โ€œNow that our enemies have been crushed,
let us go up to purify the sanctuary and rededicate it.โ€
So the whole army assembled, and went up to Mount Zion.

Early in the morning on the twenty-fifth day of the ninth month,
that is, the month of Chislev,
in the year one hundred and forty-eight,
they arose and offered sacrifice according to the law
on the new altar of burnt offerings that they had made.
On the anniversary of the day on which the Gentiles had defiled it,
on that very day it was reconsecrated
with songs, harps, flutes, and cymbals.
All the people prostrated themselves and adored and praised Heaven,
who had given them success.

For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar
and joyfully offered burnt offerings and sacrifices
of deliverance and praise.
They ornamented the facade of the temple with gold crowns and shields;
they repaired the gates and the priestsโ€™ chambers
and furnished them with doors.
There was great joy among the people
now that the disgrace of the Gentiles was removed.
Then Judas and his brothers and the entire congregation of Israel
decreed that the days of the dedication of the altar
should be observed with joy and gladness
on the anniversary every year for eight days,
from the twenty-fifth day of the month Chislev.

He answered,
"See that you not be deceived,
for many will come in my name, saying,
'I am he,' and 'The time has come.'
Do not follow them!
When you hear of wars and insurrections,
do not be terrified; for such things must happen first,
but it will not immediately be the end."
Then he said to them,
"Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues
from place to place;
and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky.

"Before all this happens, however,
they will seize and persecute you,
they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons,
and they will have you led before kings and governors
because of my name.
It will lead to your giving testimony.
Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand,
for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking
that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute.
You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends,
and they will put some of you to death.

In Wisdom is a spirit
intelligent, holy, unique,
Manifold, subtle, agile,
clear, unstained, certain,
Not baneful, loving the good, keen,
unhampered, beneficent, kindly,
Firm, secure, tranquil,
all-powerful, all-seeing,
And pervading all spirits,
though they be intelligent, pure and very subtle.
For Wisdom is mobile beyond all motion,
and she penetrates and pervades all things by reason of her purity.
For she is an aura of the might of ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰
and a pure effusion of the glory of the Almighty;
therefore nought that is sullied enters into her.
For she is the refulgence of eternal light,
the spotless mirror of the power of ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰,
the image of his goodness.
And she, who is one, can do all things,
and renews everything while herself perduring;
And passing into holy souls from age to age,
she produces friends of ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ and prophets.
For there is nought ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ loves, be it not one who dwells with Wisdom.
For she is fairer than the sun
and surpasses every constellation of the stars.
Compared to light, she takes precedence;
for that, indeed, night supplants,
but wickedness prevails not over Wisdom.

Indeed, she reaches from end to end mightily
and governs all things well.

In the time of their visitation they shall shine,
and shall dart about as sparks through stubble;
They shall judge nations and rule over peoples,
and the ๐•ท๐–”๐–—๐–‰ shall be their King forever.
Those who trust in him shall understand truth,
and the faithful shall abide with him in love:
Because grace and mercy are with his holy ones,
and his care is with his elect.

๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ said to the Apostles:
"Who among you would say to your servant
who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field,
'Come here immediately and take your place at table'?
Would he not rather say to him,
'Prepare something for me to eat.
Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink.
You may eat and drink when I am finished'?
Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded?
So should it be with you.
When you have done all you have been commanded, say,
'We are unprofitable servants;
we have done what we were obliged to do.'"

๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ makes us aware that, before ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰, we are in a similar situation: we are ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰'s servants, we are not his creditors but are always indebted to him, because we owe him everything since everything is a gift from him. Accepting and doing his will is the approach to have every day, at every moment of our life. Before ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ we must never present ourselves as if we believe we have done a service and deserve a great reward. This is an illusion that can be born in everyone, even in people who work very hard in the ๐•ท๐–”๐–—๐–‰'s service, in the Church. Rather, we must be aware that in reality we never do enough for ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰. We must say, as ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜' suggests: "we are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty" (Lk 17: 10). This is an attitude of humility that really puts us in our place and permits the ๐•ท๐–”๐–—๐–‰ to be very generous to us. In fact, in another Gospel passage, he promises people that "he will gird himself and have them sit at table, and he will come and serve them" (cf. Lk 12: 37). Dear friends, if we do ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰'s will today with humility, without claiming anything from him, it will be ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ himself who serves us, who helps us, who encourages us, who gives us strength and serenity. The angel brought me
back to the entrance of the temple,
and I saw water flowing out
from beneath the threshold of the temple toward the east,
for the faรงade of the temple was toward the east;
the water flowed down from the southern side of the temple,
south of the altar.
He led me outside by the north gate,
and around to the outer gate facing the east,
where I saw water trickling from the southern side.
He said to me,
"This water flows into the eastern district down upon the Arabah,
and empties into the sea, the salt waters, which it makes fresh.
Wherever the river flows,
every sort of living creature that can multiply shall live,
and there shall be abundant fish,
for wherever this water comes the sea shall be made fresh.
Along both banks of the river, fruit trees of every kind shall grow;
their leaves shall not fade, nor their fruit fail.
Every month they shall bear fresh fruit,
for they shall be watered by the flow from the sanctuary.
Their fruit shall serve for food, and their leaves for medicine."

Brothers and sisters:
You are ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰'s building.
According to the grace of ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ given to me,
like a wise master builder I laid a foundation,
and another is building upon it.
But each one must be careful how he builds upon it,
for no one can lay a foundation other than the one that is there,
namely, ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ ๐•ฎ๐–๐–—๐–Ž๐–˜๐–™.

Do you not know that you are the temple of God,
and that the Spirit of ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ dwells in you?
If anyone destroys ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰'s temple,
God will destroy that person;
for the temple of ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰, which you are, is holy.

From the Gospel according to ๐•ต๐–”๐–๐–“ 2:13-22

Since the Passover of the Jews was near,
๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ went up to Jerusalem.
He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves,
as well as the money-changers seated there.
He made a whip out of cords
and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen,
and spilled the coins of the money-changers
and overturned their tables,
and to those who sold doves he said,
"Take these out of here,
and stop making my Father's house a marketplace."
His disciples recalled the words of Scripture,
Zeal for your house will consume me.
At this the Jews answered and said to him,
"What sign can you show us for doing this?"
๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ answered and said to them,
"Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up."
The Jews said,
"This temple has been under construction for forty-six years,
and you will raise it up in three days?"
But he was speaking about the temple of his Body.
Therefore, when he was raised from the dead,
his disciples remembered that he had said this,
and they came to believe the Scripture
and the word ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ had spoken.

Todayโ€™s Gospel presents the episode of the expulsion of the merchants from the temple (Jn 2:13-25). ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ made โ€œa whip of cords, he drove them all, with the sheep and oxen, out of the templeโ€ (Jn 2:15), the money, everything. Such a gesture gave rise to strong impressions in the people and in the disciples. It clearly appeared as a prophetic gesture, so much so that some of those present asked ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜: โ€œWhat sign have you to show us for doing this?โ€ (v. 18), who are you to do these things? Show us a sign that you have authority to do them. They were seeking a divine and prodigious sign that would confirm that ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜ was sent by ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰. And He responded: โ€œDestroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it upโ€ (โ€ฆ)

We have here, according to the evangelist John, the first proclamation of the death and resurrection of ๐•ฎ๐–๐–—๐–Ž๐–˜๐–™: His body, destroyed on the Cross by the violence of sin, will become in the Resurrection the universal meeting place between ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ and mankind. And the Risen ๐•ฎ๐–๐–—๐–Ž๐–˜๐–™ is Himself the universal meeting place โ€” for everyone! โ€” between ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ and mankind. For this reason, his humanity is the true temple where ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ is revealed, speaks, is encountered; and the true worshippers, the true worshippers of ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ are not only the guardians of the material temple, the keepers of power and of religious knowledge, [but] they are those who worship ๐•ฒ๐–”๐–‰ โ€œin spirit and truthโ€ (Jn 4:23).
